But the term "soul sleep" as used in this manner, is ob- viously a misnomer -- .simply because a soul with no existence apart from the body could not by any stretch of the imagination be referred to as "sleeping". If it doesn't exist, it's gone! This means that at some' future time God would find it necessary to re- create the entire in- dividual. The body would first have to be resurrected, then it would be given a new soul. This is contrary to tkie teaching of God's Word. Death involves physical and spiritual separation - -, not an- nihilation n- nih•ilation1' Physical death occurs when the soul is separated from the body. Spiritual death is the eternal separation of the soul from God. But. thank God, the believer in Christ may die physically -- having his soul separated „from his body -- but olie can NEVER die spiritually. He will never ex- perience _the . separation of his soul from God. And, my believing friend, this should be a special comfort to you.' It means that your saved loved oneswho have' died are not separated from the Lord, and never shall be. When they gave their hearts to Christ, they received life everlasting. Jesus himself said; "He that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life ... ' (Jn. 5:24) We may learn two comforting, important lessons from the time of the resurrection of Lazarus. First, even -though believers may die physically, as did • Lazarus, their bodies will some day be resurrected. Remember, Jesus had said, "I am the resurrection and the life." Second, through faith in Christ the child of God possesses eternal life.. Thus in the deepest sense of the word,. he never dies. That's why Jesus could continue, "Whosoever liveth, and believeth in Me shall never die." When the believer dies, he departs from this life to go immediately into the presence of Christ. He meets Christ face to face in his eternal homein heaven. The words of the Lord Jesus at Calvary emphasize this truth. As Christ hung on the cross, one of the dying thieves expressed faith in Him, crying out, "Lord remember me when Thou comest to Thy kingdom." The Lord Jesus gave His word that they would meet again, and not way OFF in the far distant future, He promised, "Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise" (Luke 23:43). The , Bible makes it clear, however, that not everyone will enjoy the glories of heaven. You see, there is one condition that must be met if you are to enter that eternal home. The only condition is faith in God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but is passed from death unto life'.. (John 5:24) My friend the way is open to you this very •, moment. Jesus said, in John 10:9, "I am the door'; by Me if any man enter in, he shall be saved." Why not enter right now by faith? Admit your need of salvation. Acknowledge that you cannot save yourself. Then ask the Lord Jesus, on the basis of Hi's sacrifice on Calvary's cross, to cleanse you of all your sin and to save your soul. • He has promised to forgive you, aria He will. Then follow Him, live for Him, then you can lay claim to HEAVEN as your eternal home, and look forward ,with glad anticipation to its never-ending joys.
