BY VALERIE
JOHNSTON
The results are now in
for the Championship
matches that were played
this past Saturday at the
Sunset. First flight gross
winner is..Leroy_Beclour,-
second flight winner is
Stan Telford and third
flight winner is George
Williams.• Runner-up
winners included Brian
Reeve and Steve Doak.
First flight handicap
winner is Glen Falkiner,
second flight champ is
Bruce Lyndon and third
flight winner is George
Williams. Runner-ups in
this category were Paul
Baechler ,and Paul
Corriveau.
As it took 36 holes to
determine the winner for
many of these matches, it
appears that these must
have been true han-
dicaps.
The Club Champion in
the Ladies' division is. Sue
MacAdam. Verna Kane
captured the handicap
championship. The new
extended handicap
champion is Jackie
Harrison. Two ball
winners are Verna Kane
and Rocky Whalen. The
Sunset would like to
congratulate all of the
winners for their fine golf
performance this season.
As there-"Iiiias only five
holes of golf played on
Men's Night there are no
flight winners to be
mentioned. Unfor-
tunately, the weather had
a dampening effect on the
results for Ladies' Night
as few ladies were able to
play due to the rain.
Weather permitting, golf
will be played this
Ladies' Night. Members
areencouraged to bring
along 'a guest who will be
allowed to play for a
dollar.
An auction has been
planned for eight o'clock
tonight. Members are
asked to bring along their
special perserves and
baking which will be
auctioned off. Even -if the
weather does not.permit
golf, the auction will still
take place at eight
o'clock.

The Maitland Valley pansions in 1962, 1972 and
Conservation Authority 1975:
was first organized as the
Middle Maitland Con-
servation Authority,
established by an Order -
in -Council on September
6, 1951. The Authority
began to implement a
_,onservation program to
the watershed of the
Middle Maitland River
based to a large extent on
recommendations
outlined in . the_ Mi idle
Maitland Conservation
Report (1954).
In the ensuing years, it
became increasingly
evident that in order to
effectively carry out a
comprehensive con-
servation program, it
would be. necessary to
enlarge„ "the original
Middle Maitland Con-
servation Authority to
include the entire
Maitland River drainage
' area. This was ac-
complished hY ex -
The Lucknow River
watershed was included
under the jurisdiction off
the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority
in 1976 thus bringing the
total area of
management to 3,014
square kilometres.
The Authority's major
mandate is the
management of the water
resources within its,
watershed. Member
municipalities are in-
formed of impending
flood conditions through
the establishment and
maintenance of a flood
warning system
established and main-
tenance of a flood war-
ning system for all
portions of the water-
shed. The acquisition of
critical flood -plain and
flood storage areas in
rural and urban portions
of the watershed has been
undertaken to attempt to
reduce property damage.
Other non-structural
management tools such
as rural fill line and
urban floodplain map-
ping help to identify
environmental hazard
zones thus contributing to
proper land use and safe
development.
Man-made channel
improvements have been
implemented to reduce
the impact offlood.flow,
while a swampland
acquisition program is
directed at preserving
areas that act as natural
reservoirs.
The Maitland Valley
Conservation 'Authority
has no direct power in
pollution control but does
co-operate very closely
with the Ministry of the
Environment.hy _carrying.
out a water quality
testing program on the
Maitland River and its
tributaries.
