because they learn about

FOOD AND DRESS
Another thing which "
Joan loved about Austria
was the delicious food.
Everything is homemade
she says and eating is
considered very im-
portant. Lunch hours are
much longer and more
leisurely in Austria than
they are in Canada. The
people sit around and talk
over lunch. They are not
rushed as Canadians.
Joan says sheate
wienerschnitzel (breaded
veal), the national dish,
at least once a week.
There are a -lot of desserts
like sweet rolls, in the
diet too. Joan even went
grocery shopping in
Austria once but laughs
and says she wasn't
exactly sure of what she
was buying.
Joan found that the
styles of dress in Austria
were slightly ahead of the
styles in Canada mainly
because of their
proximity to France and
Italy where a lot of
clothes trends are set.
But, she says, Austrians
also wear their
traditional costumes
quite often, especially to
church. She describes the
clothes as well as the
country, as a mixture of
old and new.
Prices for clothes and
food are a bit higher in
Austria than here. One
thing which surprised
Joan at first, was that the
taxis are all Mercedes •
Benz and a lot .of
Austrians also drive this
_type.. of, car., „considered__
very expensive in
Canada. Then, she
realized that this' was
because this type of car,
does not have to be im-
ported and so is
reasonably priced,
whereas an American
car, considered
reasonably.'priced '' Over'
here would be very .ex-
pensive to buy in Austria.
KNOW ABOUT
MARGARET ..;,,;..,
Austrians know much
more about Canadians
than we know about
'them, says Joan. The
ones she talked to knew
all about our government
and who our Prime
Minister was. They also
wanted to know all about
Margaret-Trudeau! The)
were always asking Joar
how certain Canadian
skiers were doing and she
had to admit that she
didn't know.
"They, often assumed
that we were the same as
Americans but we were
always quick to point out
that we were .not
Americans," says Joan.
While staying at the
Austrian camp for the
first two weeks, Joar
went on tours almos
every day. She visited E
summer skiing area
went mountain climbing
swimming, hiking arounc
iake--and g
fish, farm, rode cable car:
and chair lifts and tourer
a special athletic corn
pleat built for the Winter
Games which Austria
hosted In 1976. There wan
not time to get homesicl
she says. There was toe
much to do!
Joan, who is a Girl
Guide, also got a chance
to go camping with a
group of Girl Guides ir.
Austria since the Baldt's
16 -year-old daughter wai
a member of the group.
This gave Joan an Insight
as to what the group there
was like and also helper
her to learn a lot of
German since that waf
all that the grout
members spoke.
Joan returned home or
August 1 but not withou
some very happ3
memories. She hopes tc
be able to visit Austrit
again as she feels then
were so many things sh•
• didn't get a chance to se:
in that beautiful country
She brought home man:
souvenirs as well a:
addresses, having made
lots of friends. She hopes
she can keep contact with
many of those she met
even if it means
