They also ended up in first place in a cup play-off but lost the semi- finals on Saturday 9 Sept. 78 to Dante Club of Sarnia. The score was 3 - 2 for Dante. Scorers for Goderich were Mike Wedlock and Mike Reynolds. The Goderich team played a good game from start to finish as they were bent on going into rials:; _ but—un- fortunately as t. -un -fortunately that hope was quashed. Every member of the team played to their best and the team was plagued with injuries due . to high school football so some players were not up to their previous ability but their heart was in the game. Larry Boyce, the goalie played an ex- cellent game and -he was covering every angle of the other team. He stopped some excellent shots. Mark • Webb, George Kerr, Randy. Stoddard and Mike Wedlock gave 100 percent in an attempt to win. The coach Mery Witter felt he had a good team this season and that the players performed ex- cellently for him in every game. He states they were +ta good bunch of kids. He is looking for- ward to defending this lea .guex--:.eh am.p-ionsh i,p-,. next year and he feels that Goderich can win the league again. The team will only lose a few players next year but there are excellent replacements coming up from the Pee -Wee ranks. Congratulations to the Goderich Bantams. for being league champions and runners-up in the cup game. • Although a small town, Goderich hq,s outclassed its city rivals in the league... The team has had good spectator support from the residents of and around, Goderich and the players and coach really appreciated it. The coach also wishes to thank the parents for'theirsupport all season especially to the out of town games. He hopes they will do the same next season. (photo by Dave Sykes) Cleaners even series with Company French Dry Cleaners tied their best of five series with Canada Company at one game apiece swamping the Company 8-0 in the second game of the series played Monday night. French grabbed 11 hits and scored in five of seven innings for the series evener. Wayne Kennedy scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the first. He singled, stole second and scored on two Company errors that left Frank MacDonald and Bill Gallow on base. Ron Klages hit a two out single to score both runners, In the second Rob Standen waited out a walk, moved around on an error and scored on MacDonald's single. Standen started the fourth with+' walk and scored on a. single by MacDonald. MacDonald scored on Bill Gallow's double. Gallow was called for a lead off but George -Sutton kept things moving with a single. Clare Harman hit a shot that short stop Bill Durst mishandled and Sutton raced home for the Cleaner's sixth run. Kennedy and MacDonald each scored in the sikth to' round off the Cleaner attack. Don McWhinney held the Company at bay giving up just five hits and striking out three while loser Glen Tigert was touched II times and struck out four. The series resumes tonight at Agriculture Park. Doherty holds off gleaners Stan Doherty fired five innings of perfect baseball while Canada Company bats collected five runs but the Com- pany had to hold off a late charge by French Cleaners to salvage a 5-4 win in the ,opening game of their best of five Industrial League semi- final. Doherty was hit seven times in the final two innings and gave up four runs before getting Ron Klages to fly out in the, seventh . to seal the win. The elder on the youthful Canada Company squad set down the first 15 batters he faced and didn't allow a Cleaner to reach first in the opening five innings. Glen Tigert drew first blood in the game with a second inning single. Mike Donnelly doubled to score him but was left standing at second as Don McWhinney retired the next two batters. In the third Terry Austin and Brian Bowman hit back to back triples and Stan Doherty reached base on an error that scored Bowman. Glen Tigert waited out a walk to move Doherty into scoring position and Pat Conlon singled to boost the Company into a four run dead. Tigert scored for ,the third time in the fifth grabbing "what proved to be the winner. He singled and moved around on an error scoring on a single by Tom O'Keefe. French: fought back in the final two innings but couldn't manage the tying run. In the sixth McWhinney and Rob Standen singled and scored on Klages' double. In the seventh George Sutton singled and scored on Ray Kluges' triple. McWhinney slashed a single to score Klages but Doherty fanned Standen and got Ron Klages to fly out to preserve the win. Loser Don McWhinney gave up eight hits and fanned four while Doherty gave up seven hits and struck out seven. Three men shy of perfect round Three men were just shy of a perfect score at the •Vanastra Gun Clubs regular skeet shoot held Saturday, September 9. ' Mery Batkin of Clinton, Cal Christie of Fullerton and Bill Boussey of London each hit 24. Knocking 23 out of the air were Doug Sutton of London,. Frank Flynn of Clinton, white John Hessel of Goderich hit°22, Glen Mogi( of Bornholni and Hiffe son Schock of Zurich each hit 21. In the trap shOot Tuesday September 5, Jack.... Mills of Guelph, George %Iamm of Blyth and Dan Crerar of Hensall ' .made perfect scores. Scoring 24 was Jamie Coldwell of Hensall, while Bert Mahhafy of Fullerton scored 23. - Other scorers included Charlie Brandon, with 22, Harrison Schock of Zurich, Fred Brally of Holmesville and Mery Batkin of Clinton, each with 21. scored the only goal of the second half and defeated Goderich 3-2 at Agriculture Park. (photo by Dave Sykes) Error gives Pontiacs edge over Gords .Sports A throwing error by outfielder Warren Watt in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Ron Sowerby an inside the park home run and lifted McGee Pontiacs to a one game lead in their best of five semi-final series with Gord's Sports. Tied at three Sowerby hit a blooper to left that shortstop Dennis Williamson went back after but couldn't reach. Watt picked up the ball and attempted to throw the ball to second to hold Sowerby to one but the throw was off and went to the right field corner. and Sowerby rounded the Bags before right fielder Lee Arbour could get the ball back to the infield. Gord's were staging a --comebi k going into the final inning having scored three times in the top of the fifth to get back in the game. The Pon- tiacs jumped to a two run lead and Gord's- evened that and went up one with their three -run burst. Ken Vanderburg drew a walk to start things off in the first and moved to third on an error. Rick Sowerby sacrificed Vanderburg over and the Pontiacs were up one. John Phillips singled in the second and moved to third on a wild pitch after reaching second on a fielder's choice. Des Courtney couldn't , find the mark and walked two runners scoring Phillips. Gord's came up big in the fifth when Williamson and Jon Ginn used errors to get aboard and scored on Warren Watt's triple. Watt scored on a sacrifice by Jon Ginn. The Pontiacs tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Rick Sowerby caught a one out single, moved down on a walk to Russ Pruder and scored on PauFKelly's single. Des Courtney struck out two and fired a three hitter in the losing effort while winner Ken Daer fanned one and gave up three hits. The teams play the second game.. of the set tonight at Agriculture Park. Harbor Report September 2 the Algosea arrived light from Kingston for salt. September 3 the Algosea cleared harbor for Cornerbrook, Newfoundland with salt. September 5 the Agawa Canyon arrived light from Kingsville for salt. September 6 the Agawa Canyon cleared harbor for St. Joseph and Holland, Michigan with salt. Housewives win ladies softball championship over Goderich The Clinton Housewives dumped the Goderich Elevators in two straight games to win the Huron Central Ladies Softball league cham- pionship. The Housewives defeated Goderich 16-8 in the first gamey of the Series in Goderich, Wednesday and wrapped the championship with an 8-7 victory in Clinton, Thursday. Clinton advanced to the final with a sweep of their best -of -three semi-final series against the Goderich Superstars and the Elevators eliminated Lucknow in similar fashion. A seven run outburst in the fifth inning of the first game ".proved to be the difference as it moved the - Housewives into a 14-4 lead. After scoring three runs in the first inning, Goderich was limited to a single run in the third inning and added four in the sixth inning. Clinton was forced to come from behind in the second game of the series and rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk. Goderich had opened the game with four runs in the first . inning but Clinton " replied with a four -run rally in their half of the first. Goderich took a three -run lead with two runs in the third inning,a single marker in the fourth. But Clinton rallied from the deficit with the tying runs' in the sixth inning and held Goderich off the basepaths in the seventh inning to set the stage for their game winning run. The Clinton Crown Sluggers won the league B title this year as they dumped °their coun- terparts, Clinton Buruma. Construction, in two straight games, 15-14 and 21-7. This year nine area teams competed in the league and they will hold their annual dance at Saltford Hall, October 13. Company edges Ziebart for semi-final berth Tom O'Brien's extra inning triple ended the season for Ziebart last week and vaulted Canada Company into the semi finals against French Cleaners. O'Brien harhmered a three bagger to score the winning run in the Company's 7-6 deciaion over Ziebart in the third game of their best,' of three playoff round. The teams squared off for the third game of their set taking turns having rallies and taking turns holding the lead. Canada Company trailed by one after two innings but struck for three in the third to go in front. Ziebart roared back with• three to go up one but the Company grabbed two for the lead for the second time. Ziebart managed to tie things up- in the seventh before O'Brien's shot wrapped things up. Rick Duckworth moved Ziebart into the lead in the fi'rst inning cracking a double and scoring on Arnie Parker's .two bagger. Wayne Doak started the second with a double and scored on a single by Ray Molland to give Ziebart a two run edge. Canada 'Company bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take over the lead. Pat Conlon chipped a single to start the rally and Dave McKenzie drilled a double to score him. Stan Doherty doubled to tie the game and Brian Bowman tripled for the one run lead. Ziebart struck for three in the top of the fourth using three hits and two Company errors to regain the lead. Wayne Doak used an error to get on to start things and Ron Corriveau smacked a two out- single to score him. Ron Whetstone doubled to score C;grriveau with the go ahead run and an error on Greg Haif en's shot and a double by Duck- worth scored Whetstone. Pat Conlon singled and stole second to start a two run burst for Canada _Company that moved them back into the lead. Stan Doherty used an error to get aboard and Brian Bowman ham- mered a double to score two runs. Down one with two out the Ziebart bats got the job done a third time in the seventh to tie things up and force extra in- nings. Parker doubled with two out and Simon Langlois singled to score him. The Company wasted no time putting Ziebart away in the bottom of the eighth sending just three men to the plate. With one out Mike Donnelly singled and scored on O'Brien's triple to end the game and the series. Stan Doherty got the win on a 10 hitter striking out five while loser Simon Langlois gave up 11 hits and struck out four.
