Love Blooms Where it is Planted
° Rev. D. Bruce Johnson
The United Church of Canada
Human nature tends to cry after a better opportu-
nity rather than for courage and insight to make a
good thing out of the materials at hand. Give me a
better body, a better income, another mate, more
education, etc. A million people are dying daily from
the effects of the `Jif only".s.yndrome. If only 1 had
been born more fortunately, if only 1 didn't have
crooked teeth, if only my husband had a different
job, if only my family were a credit to me. "Love
blooms where it is planted" and asks no miracle trans-
plant to a spot in the yard where there is more sun-
shine, more rain, more nourishment.
the secret of the joyful life is found in the ability
-77;1',"torta=kezmw l'at we tse G"od7-and--r+iake-some' -
thing of it. It doesn't take much of an opportunity
to produce a life of joy and fulfilment. It only takes
a thankful and praising heart and a readiness to meet
God daily as surely when the weather is foul as when
it is fair.
Helen Keller the blind and deaf-mute praised God
for her handicap because without it she doubts that
she would ever have met God. Waiting at anchor until
the wind shifts may be good enough for the amateur
but the experienced sailor will take the wind as it is
and sweep on to victory.
Ah yes, love takes the moment of -sorrow and' lets it
cultivate in,us a sensitive heart. Love takes the break-
down of thebody to prove that man's essence is spiri-
tual. Love takes failure and makes it a door to the
,future. Love takes a broken toy and makes it a bridge
across to oth 'r lives that have no toys at all.
Are you surrounded by difficult circumstance right
now? Are you bitter, resentful, hostile orsullen
because of your 'situation? Are you possessed of
the idea that you can never be happy until your cir-
cumstances improve? Then try to remember that how-
ever much you may be against yourself in this kind
of thinking, God is always for you. You can meet
him in the darkness as truly as in the light. "Rejoice
always. Pray without ceasing. In everything give
thanks". 1 Thessalonians 5:16
Love does not cry for a transplant but blooms
where it is planted.
