StrQ.ng wind s 1-end----tn rP by D.R. Bundy The Goderich Sailing Club finished off the -rae4ng---•season--with its - annual Round -Up Regatta last weekend. Eight different keel boats and four dinghies participated in the three - race affair, which also included the "Cock-of- theWalk” Saturday evening race. Wings were steady from the south - on Saturday, but on Sunday the sailors had to contend with 35 knot winds' and 6 to 1 0. foot waves. The races were filled with excitement right from the start..Each had its share of near collisions, frustrating attempts to fly . spin- nakers, and particularly on Sunday, a lot of wet and exhausted crews. • One young crew member was nearly lost overboard, and another boat experienced a near broach while flying a chute. Certainly not the day for anyone with a weak stomach! The steadiest sailor of the lot was Ken Bauer with his daughter Laurie -"as' i e'w.-Nbt"d'n 'y dIethey",___.-.._.-_ take the first -place award 'for the Round -Up series, but Laurie skippered her dad's boat to a convincing win in the "Cock -of -the - Walk" race for a second year in a row. Overall results are as follows: In the Keel Boat division: first, Ken Bauer; second: Lynn Meyers; third: Tom McGill. In the Dinghy class: first, . Dave Par- sons; second: Brian Hall; third: Doug Bundy. The weekend of sailing wound up with a bar- becue at Snug Harbour hosted by George and Ruth Robertson, and a presentation of gold, silver and bronze medals for the winners in, the regular summer racing series. •`The awards banquet, at which time all the trophies will be presented will be held on Saturday, November 4th at the Sunset Golf and Country Club. Junior Sailing Club held a sail-a-thon recently, raising $116 to help with the purchase of sails, with repairs, and with future regattas: J'Ive club members each received pledges per hour of salting from the community,and logged 12 hours out on the water. Prizes were awarded to the top three money makers.
