Seaweed has an annoying habit of washing into shore andmeone has to
keep it cleared away. At the Goderich beach, that job fails to the recreation
committee's summer employee Tim Doherty. The weed collects the worst
after a night of heavy winds and rain when the lake's waves stir it up. Tim
spends a fair amount of time carting the heavysaweed away from the
shoreline. (Photo by Jim Hagarty)

BY JOANNE WALTERS
Ten Lost Years, as
presented by the Sum-
merhouse One theatre
group at G.D.C.I. on the
weekend, was a moving
account „of a period often
neglected in Canadian
history books and a topic
shied away-•-from--The
Great Depression.
Through the voices of
many different
characters, tales of the
depression were told so
that even those in the
audience who had never
experienced the star-
vation, unemployment
and humiliation of those
days, could eripathize.
One of the outstanding
features of this play was
the excellent voice of Phil
Main, Jr. who ac -
guitar to songs in-
terspersed throughout
the play, two of which he
wrote the lyrics and
music himself.
The cast besides Main,
included Kevin Bundy,
Angela McDonald, David
Saint Jean, Susan Tigert
and Beth Morris --each
one talented in his or her
own right. Through bits
and pieces of broken
recollections, these
characters conveyed to
the audience what the
depression actually
meant to the people who
lived through it and those
who died because of it.
The play opened with a
mother trying to explain
the depression years to
her children. But how do
you explain it to an un-
feeling younger
generation, she laments?
One character said there
is,a conspiracy to hide
thse years as if one
doesn't talk about them,
they won't come again.
The next character
spoke of the locust plague
and said God must have
been punishing us for the
sins of the world.
The audience heard of
food being eaten that was
not fit .,fogs 4Iurnan. con-
sumption„ of, beef being
sold for one cent per
pound, of crops and cattle
dying, of wells drying up,
of backbreaking work
being done for 35 cents
per hour and of people
riding box cars coming
nowhere and going
nowhere.
The audience gained an
insight into the politics of

It was said that the

Into the second act, the
play talked about Hockey
Night in Canada, the

Shirley Temple • Dolls
making a statement on
consumerism. One
mother, whose children
writing a cheque, told her
offspring, "What you
need is to go through a
;depression" but her
husband told her never to
wish that on anyone.
Kirk Hogan was in
charge of lighting and set
design. _With few props
but old chairs and bales
of hay and grey, .shabby,
clothes reflecting the era,
Summerhouse One, in
this play adapted to the
stage by the group
members themselves,
really hits the points
home with a lot of
e'niotionally packed
punches. The play also
seemed to pFesent a
statement in these times
when Canadians are
being encouraged to
"tighten their belts."
It's a pity not more

watch the fine per-
formance of Ten Lost
Years, Director Leslie
Hogan said the small
audiences were very
discouraging as the group
had put a lot of work into
the production, their
grand finale of the
season.
Throughout the sum-
mer, the 'government
funded group performed
in the Square, held
workshops and toured
nursing homes and other
institutions. The tours
went exceptionally well,
says Leslie, showing a
great need for en-
tertainment in such
placgs.
