Life memberships give 11 two golfers
Due to holidays and
other commitments, the
Maitland Country Club
golf news has been
missing from the Signal
the past few weeks.
However, we hope to be
able to recap all the
pertinent events in this
write-up.
The course itself, in
spite of 'the dry weather
experienced early this
summer has been in good
shape, due to the hard
work of Pete Graf and his
associates, and Paul
Johnston with his crew
kept things under control
around the pro shop and
club storage area.
Our clubhouse too, has
undergone a facelifting
'With the dining and
lounge area being ex-
tended right through to
the sunporch. All that
beautiful view is now
right outside the large
windows of the former
sunporch.
Fred Jewell and his
group of volunteer
workers area to be com-
mended for tackling this
ambitious job and getting
it finished in jig -time,
The Board of Directors
hosted an Open House in
order that all the
members could have a
good look at the work
done.
During the course of
the evening life mem-
berships were presented
to Carl Schneiker and
Elmer _Robertson....These,
two men have been
golfing and curling
members respectively
for a good number of
years and this was the
club's way of honouring.
them.
Maitland's other life
members Ron Menzies,
Dolly Bruce and Jim
Kinkead were all present
for the occasion.
Speaking of the Board
of Directors, this is a
board par excellence!
They don't just sit back
and give orders -- they
are in the thick df the
work........ being. .d.vii
wielding hammers, paint
brushes, mops, tending
bar, helping put in the pro
shop -- anywhere 'that
work needs to be done you
can find one of the Board
members.
And that goes for the
membership as a whole.
There is nothing like a
"little" trouble (the
understatement of the
year!) to get people
pulling together.
I think that pretty well
covers the kudos, so now
down to the nitty gritty of
what a golf course is all
about -- GOLF!
The Maitland men,
along with Kincardine,
Walkerton and Wingham
have played a series of
inter -club matches, with
Kincardine coming out on
top.
The ladies Inter -club
matches with Kincardine,'
and Sunset showed that
Kincardine were tops
there as well.
We're going to have to
pull up our socks, put our
shoulder to the wheel and
nose to the grindstone
and beat Kincardine. (in
THAT position?)
A number of ladies
have participated in out
of town tournaments and
local winners were: Jean
Knight, Chris Hoffineyer,
Jean Hanly, Del Bedard,'
Maxine Martin, Verna
Kane, Hazel Beaver,.
Ardith Brissette, Shelagh
Sully, Vern Frith and
Verna Jackson.
Not having a complete
list of the men's winners,
we do know that three of
the top golfers were Bill
Bradley, Isidore Bedard
and Paul Johnson.
The Air Canada
Couples Tournament was
played on August 12th
with Pat and Fred Jewell
taking the honours. They
now proceed to the finals
in Brampton on Sep-
tember 8th. Congrats and
Good Luck, Fred and Pat.
Junior Club Cham-
pionship was played on
Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday of this past
week and in spite of being
well and truly soaked one
day, some good scores
wereturned in.
Winners in the various
categories were: Junior
Club Champion. Stephen
Durst; runner-up, Don
Coughlan; Juvenile Club
Champion, - . Mike,
Paquette; runner -tip, Lou
deWinter; Bantam Club
Champion, Joey
Morrissey; runner-up,
Dan Durst; Junior Girls
Club Champion, Doreta
Jackson, runner-up, Jane
Ferguson.
August . 26 saw the
Invitational Couples
Tournament being played
at Maitland.
Winners in this test of
skill were: low gross,
Alex and Alice Duthie of
New Dundee; low net,
Howard and Kathy
Renaud of Thames
Valley. Local winners
were Tony and Del
Bedard, Ed and Ardith
Brissette, Fred and Edna
Looker and John and
Verna Kane. It was a
great day for golf and
ound-up regatta
loses sailing season
The Goderich Sailing
Club will be holdingit s
annual "Round -up
Regatta" this holiday
weekend, bringing to a
close the major. portion of
this summer's racing
events.
Unlike some of the
highly competitive
regattas that have been
hostedby the Goderich
Club this past summer,
this weekend has been
planned for fun and
friendly competition.
There will be three
races..:. in
Saturday afternoon at
1330 h.', and two on Sun-
day.
George and Ruth will
be cooking _up the
traditional corn and
" sloppy Joes at Snug
Harbour late Sunday
afternoon, so bring along
eating utensils and- your
mown dessert, - All 'club members are
urged to come out and
join in the sailing and
then stay for.. the bar.•
beetle that follows.
Results of last Sunday's
race, the last in the Fall
series are: In the Keel
boat class: first; Ken
Bauer; second; Steve
Smith; third: . Ken
Dawson.
In the Dinghy class:
first; Mullin,* Bundy,
second: Dave Parsons,
third: Dave Smith,
from all accounts, a good
time was had by all!
Last Ladies' Night was
Guest Night. There were
some weird and won-
derful scores turned in
but it was all in good fun
and we hope the guests
enjoyed themselves.
Low net winners in
each flight were Hazel
Beaver and Karen Scott,
Edna Looker and
Mar,iette Leblanc, Joanne
Jasper and Dianne
Morrissey and Martina
Schneiker and Anne
Mclsaac.
Play for the various
club trophies is well
under way and cham-
pions will be decided on
Championship Day when
finalists will play off.
This is a big day so come
on golfers and make sure
you are eligible to play.
The Tennis Committee
has been reporting its
own events and they
really have an active
thriving group. Tennis
has really come on strong
the past , few years
and the lights are burning
brightly ' down at
Maitland every dry night.
One last word, golfers --
in view of the fact that we
have been working so
hardto keepthe
clubhouse and area
looking so trim - all
summer, it seems a small
thing to ask that each and
every one of us, boys and
girls, men and worsen,
should REPLACE OUR
DIVOTS. ._.
This is one of the first
.lessons we are taught
When we start to play
Of, but too many of us
forget too soon.
