.Round
When you have a hobby
you enjoy, people soon
get to know about it and
want to share their
beautiful special places
with you, when they know
you won't abuse this
confidence.
Recently I was invited
to visit "The quietest spot
in Ute world" or words to
that effect - now I agree
with them and it is
beautiful.
For a few minutes the
quiet and aloneness of it
all unnerved me a bit. I
stood still and just looked
around - everything was
so green-'alt'the greens in
the world surrounding
you - and the small
reflecting pool seemed
like a deep greeny -black
mirror.
Hundreds of tall, lanky
trees - I could scarcely
believe their height -
surrounded me.
Outside . it was
becoming a hot day, here
it -was so cool I pulled on
my sweater.
-._--I-stood-alone-a-nd-in-ave----eoler----s-ttiff--and-
of this place alone with
my God and mother
nature. It shook ' me. I
suddenly realized that the
• sun was, lighting up 'the
place.
. It was early and the sun
was creeping over the
crest of the hill touching
the tops of the trees. As I
looked up I had the
feeling that they were
reaching up to draw the
sun in and I could see the
sunlight sparkling all
about them.
At this point the only
thing I had ready was my
easel .which was sitting
practically in the centre
of this small am-
phitheatre with my
"junk" still piled in a
heap. Green, green,
green.
bout
'A
«<...,.a , fir., ..`,...,....., ..,..... r.., .......... .
I looked INTO the trees'
- the closer ones , were
beginning to stanfl alone
as the sun touched the top
and edges of .. the bran-
ches. but that green was
dark, very dark close to
the ground but it was
growing lighter as the sun
hit the outer edge of the
woods.
The pool with its grassy
edge was such a dark
green you could hardly
believe the reflections.
I had forgotten my
apprehension and was
trying to figure out how I
was going to put this on
canvas.
Colours suddenly
started to appear - bits of
earthy amber, a streak of
lighter warmer earth and
dry sandy grasses.
Suddenly myriads of little
bright lights sparkled
from behind around and
above the trees - there
was no way a slow poke
like me could catch this
sight in oils so I grabbed
the tote bag of water
started.
I've got to put the
sunlight on first, then get
some of those trees
situated - get those darks
in before they disappear -
move - move faster -- I
was really TALKING to
myself.
As the nearer' ' tree
caught the sun I could see
their dark branches
twisting and turning,
pushing out in every
direction.
Just try mixing colors
on a small pallette with a
few small spaces for
puddles - it is quite atrick
as your colors escape and
"muddy up".. Rats! I
envy people who can
control water colors.
I wished the sun would
wait a few minutes for
each step as I try to get'
that deep shadow and still
show the sun trying to get
through.
Now leaves were
beginning to glow against
their dark background as
the sun catches a bit here
and a piece there, bright
golden yellow is jumping
all over the place now;
I've covered up too much
of the yellow on my paper
now, I can't capture that
golden feeling - I need two
or three hands ---sigh!
I • remember twin
brothers, who, with their
parents, sta-yed' -a-- few
weeks each summer at
the Bedford Hotel.
Wherever you saw the
boys their English
looking mum and • dad
were right on their heels -
or walking ahead of
them. You just couldn't
tell if they. liked that or
not - anyway, after a few
years there was just one
-get--of-t-he-parents-to..tag-along-
and the boys were doing
fine art work. Later they
were alone and were
creating a name for
themselves in the art
world doing beautiful
portraits as many • here
will recall.They would
work together on the one
painting s it developed'
quickly catching those
fleeting lights or at-
mosphere.
Why couldn't I be that
lucky - here I was
the sun - working
backwards since your
lights and blights are on
the paper. Cover them
and they're gone forever -
you peed three hands!
One to stop you doing the
wrong thing. ,
Sounds were beginning
Last week's Tourists of the Week were Betty and Dick Gosnell of Beaver
Falls, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Gosnell, who were taking their time
touring through this part of the country decided to spend a day in Goderich
after reading about the interesting sights here in a tourist brochure. They
walked into the Welcome Centre at the right moment and were chosen to be
treated to a free meal at the Candlelight restaurant with host Jean Adams
and a tour of the town. They said they were very impressed .with the
cleanliness of Goderich and all the flowers and well -kept homes here. (Photo

to register - a few flies
and bugs were humming,
some blackbirds were
getting noisy, then the
crows started - you'd
think they owned the
place the way they throw
their voices around the
trees.
Now the sun has slipped
into everything and I
wish I could run the
"film" backwards to see
the beginnings again.
That's what I needed - a
good camera to catch
that dozen' beautiful
paintings that have
slipped by me because I
hadn't caught them. How
do you hold a sunbeam in
your hand? That's what I
should have been doing -
catching those moments
instead of getting so

now gone - I'll have to
, come again - soon - even
the summer is ,fleeting
disappearing too quickly.
I gathered up my, stuff.
The circle was now in full
sun - a glorious' sight. I
decided I might just as
.well forget the paints and
bring a book next time -
the feel of this untouched
haven made you feel
fresh and bright, so just
relax, lap it up.
I wonder if others could
or would see it this way -
why try to spread it if
they can't FEEL it?I
know many who would
look around and think I
was off my rocker
because there was
NOTHING there but
quiet, trees, bugs,
flowers; a large .mirror
and the sun doing all sorts
of thingsashe crept over
the mountain - but I. can
only wish- such a hap-
pening for you sombtime
and please God, you will
FEEL it too.
Next Sunday evening
our Laketown Band
wraps up a beautiful
season of concerts in
Harbour Park. Don't
miss it, they'll probably
have you singing along
with them - and where do
we get a chance
nowadays to SING
ALONG?
I like the way more and
more folks are, picking up
the words "Lakeport"
and "Port of Goderich".
It is about time we
showed we were proud of
a fine port - the only one
Martha
on this side of Lake Huron
right down to, Sarnia.
Don't be afraid to brag it
-up - it I'S a good PORT.
The summer season is
drawing to a close and all
sorts of things are hap-
pening this weekend and
next - the rash to finish
things - like league ball
games, boating, more '
swimming and the trips
toBlyth Theatre and
Huron Country
Playhouse, Grand Bend.
Don't miss the variety
show on Sunday, August
27 at GDCI„p big one to
close G.L.T.'s summer
season.
Check your bulletin
board and have a good
weekend.
