One question
Dear Editor,
In the sermon on your
"Church Page" today,
the statement is made:
"Early Church Councils
hammered out
statements of religious
truth, and the main-
stream of historic
Christianity has stayed
within the boundaries of
those doctrines all of
these years." He also
referred to "lack of
historic perspective" on
the part of those he
criticized.
In referring to
"Councils" he failed to
,name the one where the
doctrine of the "Trinity"
was "hammered out".
The Council of which
H.G. Wells said: "It
forcibly crystalized the
controversies of two
centuries and formulated
the creed upon which all
the existing Christian
churches are based, was
one of the most disastrous
and one of the least
venerable of all religious
gatherings. The
systematic destruction of
all heretical writings by
the orthodox, had none of
that quality of honest
conviction which comes
to those who have a real
knowledge of God. It was
a bawling down of
dissensions that, left to
work themselves out,
•would have spoiled good
business."
Constantine, who called
that council, the Pagan
emperor of Rome, took
the lead in this because
he wanted a united
empire at any price.
The Encyclopedia
Britannica, under
"Corruptions of
Christianity" states:
"The people were often
disposed to fancy that the
priests could serve God in
there were mysteries in
religion which the priests
understood, but which the
laity need not kn
anything of and ought not
inquire into." While this
may be a prevalent idea
today, remember this
was one of the corrup-
tions of Christianity. (2
Thessalonians 2:3)
Where, really,.does the
"lack of historic per-
spective" lie?
Sincerely yours
C.F. Barney

Dear Readers....

decisively. They must
stop the pain in . an ar-
thritic ankle, cease the
crying in a colic baby,
dismiss the worry of a
hysterical woman, soothe
the anguish of a• dying
man.
All this and more a
doctor must be to his
patients .... and a pauper
besides. For while doc-
tors are often required to
give up their homes and
their families and their
privacy for their patients,
they are just as often
made to feel ashamed of
their right to charge for
services • rendered, or
much worse, ridiculed for
the substantial monetary
rewards doctors
generally enjoy in
relation to the income of
their patients.
+ + +
As patients, we should
all examine our attitude
toward the doctors of this
community.
In this age of instancy,
have we come to expect a
doctor's attention on a
moment's notice? Do we
tend 'to exaggerate our
ills? Do we honestly rate
our medical problem
according to where it fits
into the scale . marked
worrisome, bothersome;
dangerous and urgent?
Are we inconsiderate of
our doctors? Of other
patients, some of whom
might be sicker than we?
Do we rush , to the
emergency department
at the hospital in order to
force the doctor to see us?
Or do we use the
emergency department
as we should ... in case of
emergency only?
Do we restrict our
visits to the doctor to
need? Or have we
developed a habit of
seeing the doctor at the
slightest twinge?
Have we learned
anything from previous
visits to the doctor? Do
we bathe a fevered child
and administer aspirin
and fluids• before calling
the doctor? Do we take a
hot bath and go to bed for
an hour to treat a tension
headache before we
panic? Do we endure that
backache for a day or
two, administering the
tried , ad proven
remedies • frorfi the
medicine cabinet, before
concluding we have two
slipped discs and are in
need of an immediate
xray?
Do we follow the
doctor's advice once we
have seen him? Or do we
stop taking the pills.
Neglect to fill the
prescription. Slip off the
diet. Lift too much too
soon?
Do we argue with our
doctors, insisting we
know better what ails us?
Do we make
unreasonable demands,
asking for drugs we don't
-need or treatments that
are not indicated?
Dr. Lynch is right.
People in Goderich and
district can do a whole lot
to make life more
bearable,for the doctors
now in town ..., and to
attract and hold new
doctors to assist with the
workload.
We can all help".
Everyone of us. Let's do
it.

WATER PRESSURE
NOTICE
On September llth we will be draining our elevated tank for a period of
from two to three weeks to facilitate repairs and painting of the Interior.
During that period we will be using the water tank at the Bluewater Cen-
tre to control pressure.
To enable us to set our controls for proper functioning of the system while
the tank is'shut down we will be conducting a trial run on Monday, August
28th between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Due to the 'difference in elevations there will be a reduction of water
, pressure of approximately 10 lbs.
We apollgize for this inconvenience but it isnecessary to maintain an ef-
ficientwater system for the Town of Goderich.
Your co-operation in limiting your war usoage during these periods will
be appreciated and assure sufficient water for use in case of a malor fire.
If any adverse conditions arise please phone 524-7371 during working
hours or 524-6583 after hours.
