Hospital gets special g

The Ontario Ministry of Health will give a
special grant to Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital to assist the board to make up the total
financial deficit discovered earlier this sum-
_ mer. Board ._.n mAers met Wednesday .eV.ening----,-.
to discuss the conditions of the one-time grant,
which amounts to $140,575.
The ministry has requested that hospital
assets of $298,368 be utilized to wipe out the
debt. This sum includes $84,866 which was
being held in an unrestricted endowment fund
as well as other money from various hospital
operations.,,
Board chairman Mrs. Jo Berry said this week
all back salary commitments to staff have been
met. During the summer, $142,481 in retroactive
pay and salary increases was paid out.
"• .`,Last year's problems are all cleared up and
we're staying within budget this year," Mrs..
Berry said. "No further staff cuts are an=
ticipated."
The provincial ministry of health has also
instructed the hospital board to_restrict the
purchase of new equipment to the barest
essentials and to supply mininstry officials with
monthly balance sheets in accordance with

Severances
granted for
development

Developer Jim Morris of Goderich, and ar-
chitect Nick Hill, also of Goderich, have
received approval from Goderich Township
Council for the severances Morris will need to
build five estate residences at Benin
There are some conditions attached to the
approval, however. The developer has been
requested to pay a sum of $2,500 representing
five per cent of the land value, to the township.
This is according to the planning act which
specifies that in the case of a new development,
the developer -must give the municipality either
five per cent of the land for recreation pur-
poses, or cash representing five per cent of the
value of the development land.
Goderich Township in this instance,
requested the money which it is understood will
be applied to recreational facilities in the
township. •
A second condition applies, that a new road to
service 'the new 'development be built by the
developer in accordance with township and
engineering standards. A paved road is called
for under the township agreement.
In other business, council members approved
tile drain loans requested by H.B. Whitely, E.U.
Mcllwain and Chester Sturdy. They also ap-
proved building permits as follows: Ed Szusz,
swimming pool; Fred Van Marr, two silos and
an addition to his barn; Gordon Johnston,
workshop; Stanley Freeman, barn demolition; •
Nick Den Boer, corn crib; Philip Bugler,
swimming pool; Fred Couch, tool shed; and
Don Forbes, verandah.
The tender of Radford Construction" to load
and spread 17,000 yards of gravel at 55 per yard
and another 2,000 yards at $1.10 was accepted
by council. It was the lowest of three tenders.
Radford was also hired at $40 per hour ,to
clean out an open portion of a- land drain,as
tendered by council. Two tenders were
received.

APPROVED ACTION
The ministry agreed with the board's action
to curtail the use of 13 hospital beds, and has
recommended that these beds should remain
unstaffed for a time in order to contain ex-
penses;
