Centre raises over $1,200 Antique show success BY JOANNE WALTERS With profits exceeding $1,200 and close to 700 browsers and buyers, the first annual Antique Show and Sale held at the Bluewater Centre for the Developmentally Han- dicapped last Friday and Saturday, is what can be termed as a monumental success! The auditorium at the -- C-e1Ttr" WaS—iransiormFOE into a huge antique store for the two day event as 21 dealers from South- western Ontario set up attractive displays to delight even the most modest of collectors.. Pat Wheeler, co- ordinator of the Centre's Volunteer _Asso.ciati.on which sponsored the event, saidl' organizers were pleased with the community support received, and "really thrilled" ith the dealers who took part. Apparently the dealers were "thrilled" top as many of them have already asked to be first on the list fora spot at the show again. -next year: Quite a number of antiques were sold, in- cluding everything from large pieces of furniture to dishes and post cards.. All items displayed and sold were guaranteed to be authentic according to contracts signed by the dealers. Some antique dealers were even present at'the show from the U.S. for a look around and one from Michigan was heard to remark, "I've been to only two good shows this year and this is one of them!" Next year's show will feature at least the same number of dealers again _a nd,maybe.even_myor a& the displays could expand out into the hallways. The auditorium, including the stage, was just the right size for the number of displays this year. The idea for the Antique Show and Sale originated with Kay Prevett, Vice-president of the Centres Volunteer Association. Once in the antique business herself, she suggested a show and sale of antiques when the Association members were frying to ,think of ways to raise money. The idea blossomed with the, help of Joan Huyck who gave professional con- tacts and advice to the organizers the event. The Volunteer Association raised money from the show solely through the admission price of $1 per person and the selling of lunches in the.... canteen, including home-made pies which were donated. The money raised will go toward a permanent camp -ite which is being developed for the Cen- tre's residents at the lake bank there. This is an on- going project which will take the Volunteer Association several years to complete. But with successful ventures like the- -Antique - Show and Sale, which will now be held annually, there is no t11St-`th-at—th ey -wiit-- eventually complete this very worthwhile project in the years to come.- -GODERICH ome.- UODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1978—PAGE 3A fridge Club scores Barry,' Tate of Embro has a collection of old postcards featuring small Ontarlo towns and by attending the first annual Antique Show and_Sale at the Bluewater Centre fast F rid'ay he was -able- to -add to that collection.
