John Stewart was
active in agricultural and
horticultural societies,
and represented Huron
Bruce and Grey on the
directorate of the Fruit
Farmers' Association of
Ontario. He brought to
Benmiller its first motor
truck, with hard tires.
His greenhouses were
heated from a wood fire,
the water running
through tile flumes on
each. side of each
greenhouse. Mr. Stewart
had some bush of his own,
and bought more.
He died January 12,
1897. At that time his
surviving children would
have been from 16 to 38
years of age, but
probably few were at
home.. His will, drawn
Feb, 25, 1896, provides no
clue, as it left all property
and personal estate to his
wife Helen and appointed
her executrix.
She outlived him by 31
years Helen. Seiveright
Stewart died September
23, 1928, in her 91st Year,
and the Signal noted that
she.had "passed 65 years
of her long life at Ben -
miller."
John and Helen Stewart
had nine sons and six
daughters. The majority
could not ' stay on the
farm; only two followed
the nursery business. In
the family record, three
sons and two daughtaers
are listed as dying un-
married, without other
particulars.
Vital statistics kept in

teresting particulars as
to cause of death in three
instances. John Stewart,
who died Oct. 10, 1891, at
engineering (executive.
James died in 1955, his
wife in 1939.
Isabelle, born in 1869,
married. John Norman
Kernighan, . and they
farmed west of Ben -
miller. After retirement
they resided for 10 years
in Toronto, then in
Goderich, where Mr.
Kernighan was .a Justice
of the Peace.
Mrs. Kernighan died
here on Feb. 10, 1943, in
her 74th year. She was
survived by two sons,
John Stewart on the
homestead, and. Murray,
B.A.Sc., M.C.J.C., P.
Eng., president Beacon
Chemicals, Milton. He
married Marguerite
Muriel Wilson, and they
had to sons and one
daughter.
John was elected reeve
of Colborne three times in
succession from 1956
through 1958. He married
Mabel Gertrude
MacDonald, and they live
in Goderich. Their son
Russel married Audry
Colleen Feagan,.
daughter of James H.
Feagan of Colborne.
Russel is a member of
this year's township
council.
Lewis Grant Stewart
was in the tailoring
business with Charles at
Lucknow, Brantford and
'Woodstock. A bicycle
racer, he used to race the
Grand Trunk from
Clinton to Lucan
Crossing. He married
Annie Matheson, of
Lucknow. They had one
daughter, Jessie Lee,
who married William
Henry Thomas, motor
mechanic. They had one
son, ° William .Henry
Thomsas, Jr. Mrs.
Thomas died in Buffalo in
1955.
Helen (Ellen), „born in
1973, taught 'school in
Goderich for some years.
Elizabeth and Ann,
twins, were born January
11, 1875. Lizzie was
married to Charles
Bretton Middleton, of
Goderich Township. They
had two \children:
Stewart Grant, a farmer,
who married Grace
McEwen, and Hugh John,
B.A. Sc., P. Eng., who
married Catherine.
Halliday Walker.
Ann married James
Anderson, of Goderich
township.
Martin Seiveright, for
some years associated
with his brother Joseph in
the Benniiller nursery
business, became a
florist in California, and
died at Saugus, in that
State. He married
'the age of ._27, was a Margaret MacDonald.

Grace, born in 1881,
married John Ferdinand
Grey. In later years she
was in a Cleveland
nursing home.
RAN THE
NURSERY
Joseph, born at Ben -
miller March 10, 1876,
was the last of the sons of
John Stewart. He at-
tended S.S. 2, Benmiller,
and from youth devoted
himself to the nursery
business developed by his
father. The business at
one time employed four"
salesmen.
When Joe died on June
12, 1960, at 84, he was
considered Benrniller's
oldest resident.
He married in 1945,
when 68, Maysie Mur-
dock, daughter of Francis
Garden Murdock and
Margaret (Brown)
Murdock, of Aberdeen,
Scotland. She came to
Canada when 16, at-
tended MacDonald
College there,' and lived
in Woodstock and Clinton
before coming to
Goderich.
After the death of her
husband, she sold the
nursery property and
lived at 116 Oxford Street
in Goderich. She died in
hospital here January 8,
1975, aged 78. She was a
member of Knox church.
WILLIAM STEWART
William Stewart,
second child of Charles
and Jane Stewart, after
arrival from Scotland in
1856 worked for a time
among- the farmers to
earn a little money, then
joined the staff of the
Bank of Montreal in
Goderich as a messenger.
For 30 years he was a
familiar figure in
downtown Goderich as he
delivered drafts to stores
and other business places
and collected them when
accepted. He Was very
conscientious and ef-
ficient in this task, but the
procedure has been
almost entirely done

away with, evidently due
to gradual growth in the
use of remittances by
cheque. The practice
would not be considered
wasteful.
William Stewart
retired to p.en'S,ion in 1916,
and at his Trafalgar
street residence, where
he lived for more than 60
years, he hada wonderful
collection of ornamental
trees, plants and flowers.
He died Jan. 7, 1929, aged
92. He married Qrace
