They scattered before the years of migration to the Canadian West. John was the eldest of Charles Stewart's sons, and at the age of 21 came to Upper Canada with a younger brother, William, in 1856. Upon reaching Hamilton by water, the brothers made their way by ox -waggon along what is now Highway 8 to- the . home of William Edward, whose wife, a MacDonald, was their aunt. The farm was on Lot 103, Maitland Concession of Goderich township, at the southeast corner of Con. IV. Edward had bou-ght it from James Elliott on Nov. 16, 1837, but 'the family is said to have been in Huron for 23 years when the Stewart boys arrived. The brothers took employment with far- mers to earn money, and later helped lay the James Stewart's Saltford house (above) as it was in 1882. It was the birthplace of Rev. J. Ure ' Stewart, now of Seaforth. Below, the same house, remodelled by successive owners, as it appears in 1978. . Elgin Park, former James Stewart house on Elgin Avenue at South Street, was completed in 1896 by Buchanan and Rhynas for $1800. It is of solid brick, with foundation of Maitland River stone.
