the first woman superintendent in Ontario. The campers and her staff react
no differently to her than they would to a man she says. As a park planner,

In these days of ardent
women's liberation, there
have been a lot of
newspaper stories
kicking around about
women entering
traditionally male jobs
and professions, stories
about, say, the first
female pilot with Air
Canada or the first
female fire fighter in a
certain city, etc. etc.
Not to be outdone in this
department, Goderich
has a first too — the first
female Provincial Park
superintendent in
Ontario. And at the risk of
using a somewhat worn
out theme, here is her
story_
Wendy McNab started
her job at Point Farms
Provincial Park, just
north of Goderich, in May
of this year and so far she
has not encountered any
problems stemming from
the fact that she is a
woman in a type of ex-
clusively male job_ When
she is patrolling the camp
grounds, she does get
some comments from
campers who have been
to Point Farms before,
but they mostly just say,
"You're new here, aren't
fall guy for .U.S. Admiral's
plan to have American naval
officer first Normandy in- !

As the new park superintendent at Point Farms
Provincial Park, Wendy McNab must co-ordinate
the maintenance and administration of the park, do
all the paper work, co-ordinate visitor services and
patrol the grounds enforcing rules under the
Provincial Parks Act. The enforcement aspect of
her job presents no problem she says. The campers
listen to her the same as they would to a male
superintendent. (Photo by !oanne Walters)

which required planning

When Blake Evans,
who had been park
superintendent .for. three
years at Point Farms,
left t command a fishing
control boat on Lake
vacant and Wendy was
offered the job for two
main reasons she says,
'partly because she just
happened to be available
and partly because it
would give her
background, experience
and insight into the
practical operation of a
park for new per-
spectives in planning:
"When Blake left, there
was no one inthe district
to fill in so I was tr4n-
sferred here for the
summer. I'd really like to
• stay on for awhile. I feel
that I'm only starting to
get familiar with things,"
she says.
From actually working
in the capacity of a park
superintendent, she
admits that she can now
—afilireaate-a lot more of
what goes into the run-
ning of a park and she has
also learned the
portance of the
teraction between
park's staff and
visitors.

Working as a park
superintendent is quite
different from her
planning job at the
regional office in that she
deals with the public
more, is outside a lot and
has to cope with many
changes from day today.
Her work at the regional
office is mainly theort-
tical she says. It includes
doing administrative
work,- compiling plans-,
attending meetings,
" visiting parks and doing
field work. It keeps her
very busy and she says
she will have quite a bit of
work Waiting for her
there when she returns in
the fall.
As superintendent,
Wendy's main duties are
