hr substance 'can't make up its mind
Can you imagin'e a
magic substance that
gets lighter when yott,
chill it. and lighter still
when you heat it? Unlike
nioseother substances we
know. that is exactly the
way water behaves.
We know the water in
the bottom of a lake in'.
summertime is cooler
.than the surface water-.
We also know that water
in its coldest form, ire,
floats on either warm or
cold water.
The point of change is
3.2, degrees Fahrenheit.
Until it reachesthis
temperature. colder
water sinks. But from
this temperature
downward, it rises.
How fortunate it is that
nature planned it this
way, for if the take froze
from the bottom up, all
the plant and animal life
in the lake would be
destroyed. And no one
could go ice skating until
the lake froze solid!
This accounts for
another strange event
that takes place' in fall
and spring: most . lakes
overturn! That is. " the
water layers' -eXchange
places and mix.
Often bits of algae
floating on the surface,
and a cloudiness in -the
water are clues that the
overturning has taken
place.
You can conduct a
simple kitchen ex-
periment -that shows how
warm water rises and
cold water (to 39.2
-degrees) sinks. ,
You'll need a short
piece of plastic tube- or
drinking straw. and a
small funnel. a glass of
clear and 'a glass of
.colored ice water. and a
glass of clear and a glass
of colored hot water.
Place the funnel in one
end. of the tube,. Let the
other end rest on. the
bottom of . the glass of
clear ice water.
Very' slowly pour the
colored hot water in the
funnel, being careful not
to overflow the funnel.
You will , notice the
colored water rises if you
pour smoothly and
slowly.
Now.
hot water, repeat, water. It will form a layer
