Canada Company dumped French 5-3 Sunday and then edged Lakeport 4-2 in eight innings Monday. French hammered Green and Parent 12-3 Monday to leave the teams deadlocked in first place with 22 points. A third inning error on a pop fly to the infield provided the' two -run difference in the Com- pany victory over French. With the bases loaded in the Company. side of the third inning, second baseman Ron Klages dropped a high fly ball that scored two runs. There were two out,at the time. The Company jumped on losing pitcher, Don McWhinney, for three runs in the top of the first inning on five hits. Pat Conlon, Glen Tigert, Tom O'Keefe, Mike Donnelly and Bill Durst laced McWhinney ' for first innings hits that resulted in three runs. - French got a run back in the second inning as Rill Gallow walked .and scored on errors but the Company boosted their lead to 5-1 with the two runs inthe third inning. French added single runs in the third and fifth innings as Ron and Ray Klages scored. Pat Conlon and Don- nelly led the Company • cks down Frenc nine -hit attack.' with two hits apiece. Ray Klages had two of the five French hits. Stan Doherty picked up' the victory giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out seven batters. McWhinney gave up nine hits in the loss but .held the Company to two hits over the final- -four in- nings. Doherty picked up his second decision of the week as Canada Com- -pany rallied for 4-2 win over Lakeport in eight innings. The game was scoreless for the first five innings and Doherty broke the ice with a two - run homer in the top of the sixth scoring Glen Tigert. Doherty was two outs from winning the ball game in the seventh when he walked Eta Jones and served up a home run ball to. Tim McLean to tie the score. Lakeport had runners on first and second with one out in their halt of the eighth before Doherty got Buck Million on an infield fly and struck out McKenzie to end the game. (photo by Dave Sykes) Blue Jays lack key hits The Goderich BlueJays`. lost twice at home in WOAA midget baseball action during the past week. Wednesday they lost 9-4 dropped a 6-1 decision to,Chesiey. Their inability to get the key base hits spelled the Blue Jays downfall against Listowel. The Jays left a total of 14 men on base, and even though 'they outhit Listowel, 10-7, could not- come up with hits when they needed them. McCutcheon was the winning pitcher for Listowel, going ' the distance, striking out six, and walking seven. Mike Pitre was the starting and losing pitcher for Goderich. He was relieved in the fourth inning by Dennis Don- nelly. Together, the two. Goderich pitchers struck out 14 Listowel batters and'-walk&d a total of five: Four of the Blue Jays, Andy Moore, Larry Madge, Rob McDonald and Dave Moore had two hits each.. Doug Cruickshank and Mike Pitre had one safety apiece. Sunday's game with Chesley was a' pticher's duel between Chesley's Emke and the Jay's Dennis Donnelly. Emke gave up seven hits -and Donnelly six but the difference was in control. The Chesley pitcher issued only one -free pass while Donnelly walked six. Emke fanned 11 Jays while Donnelly struck out nine Chesley hitters. The' nine inning game was played in just two hours. Each team committed two errors. Andy Moore and Rob McDonald had two hits apiece for Goderich. Donnelly, Mike Pitre and Mark Jones had one each. Emke led Chesley at the plate with three of the six Chesley hits. • The 'Blue Jays record, with the two losses, slipped' to six wins, four losses and one 'tie. Next, Scheduled games for the Jays are two road games, Sunday in Wingham and Monday in Kincardine. Langlois stops`McGees 4-1 Ziebart lifted their season record over the 500 mark with two vic- tories in Industrial league action last week. Ziebart shaded McGee,. Pontiacs 4-1 behind the three -hit pitching of Simon Langlois Thursday and battered Graham Electric 13-3 in a five inning game Suriday. Frank Donnelly and Martin Stapleton finished second in the Howell game with 631/2 points and ,were followed by A. Weerasooriya and John Wood with 63 points.. The team of Bill n Duncan and Jte Martin finished fourth with 57 points and Mary Anne and Bob Dempsey had 541/2 points. BY BARB GQNLQN The Lake Huron Zone Recreation association held its first organized meet of the season in Kincardine this past Saturday:' Four- teams par- ticipated from com- munities in* Goderich( Kincardine, Listowel and Elmira. The competition was very keen and Goderich Swim Team topped the day's events with 323 points. Elmira placed second with 258 points followed by Kin- cardine with 234 points and Listowel with 207 points. The Goderich Swim Team had good pen- formances from all swimmers which con- tributed to the Goderich win. Relays were the deciding factor in the over-all team per- formance and every swimmer on the Goderich team participated on at least -one relay. Individual standouts were as follows: Girls 8 and under; Jane Hall, fourth place in freestyle, back crawl and breast stroke. Boys 8 and under; Steven White, fourth place in freestyle and back crawl,Girls 9 and 10; Lisa Kisch, first place in butterfly, second place in freestyle, and fourth place in breaststroke. Boys 9 and - 10; Peter Conlon first place in freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly. Girls 11 and '12; Katee Gracey; first place in freestyle and second place in backstroke and butterfly. Boys 11 and 12; Andrew Telford; second place in butterfly, third place in, freestyle and fourth place, in back crawl. Girls 13 and 14; Barbara Conlon; • first place in freestyle and first place in butterfly. Also Trish Robarts had a first place in breaststroke. Boys 13 and 14; , irn Goddard first place' in butterfly, third place in individual medley and a fifth place in freestyle. Girls 15 and over; Tammy Wilson first place in back crawl and Claudette Richard with two second place ribbons in back crawl and breaststroke. Boys 15 and over; Kevin Bosworth with a first place in back - crawl and a second place in freestyle. Coach Sam James commented that he was very pleased with the performance u of this year's swifn team, ex- pecially since it was the first meet of the season. New swimmers are in- vited to join and become part of a competitive, swim program. Interested participants should call Sam James at the pool at 524-7591. Practice times are at4:30 pm for the Junior team and 9:00 pm, for the Senior team, The next swim meet is this Saturday in Exeter and on the 29th the Goderich . Swim Teamt will host their first meet of the year. Lakeport trims Little Bowi 1O-2. Lakeport Steel laced three Little Bowl pitchers for nine hits en route to a 10-2 win in Industrial League action Sunday. Lakeport combined 11 walks with their • nine' hit offence in the route of Little Bowl. They built up -0 lead after 41/2 in- ni :s of play before Little owl was able to reply ith two runs in their half of the fifth inning. Ron Miller was the es top batter with hits in as many to the plate in- cluding a double. He also scored three runs. Team mate Wayne Draper ' chipped in with two hits, both of them doubles. • Rob Snell, Glen Falkiner and Bill ' Chisholm had two hits apiece and accounted for six of the Little Bowl seven hits. Draper went the distande on the mound for Lakeport allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out seven batters. The win was the sixth of the season for Lakeport against 10 losses. They,` are in third position in the Dunlop Division.
