Research done by the UWO Dementia Study Group, comprised of faculty members from . the Departments of Psychiatry, Medicine and Pathology, „ is being supported by a two-year $40,000 grant from the UWO Academic Development Fund. Dementia is a condition affecting about 10 per cent of the population over 65. It is charac- terized by memory and - judgement loss as, weJ, s loss of control of bodily functions. The aim of the research is to establish quan- titative relationships between dementia and changes in the brain, ultimately providing a basis for the study of biochemical or other disturbances responsible for the illnesses. Widespread support of the study group is recognition of the im- portance=,of, changes in the brain and dementia produced in some elderly persons. Not only is it an unpleasant and debilitating -disease but it is one which can cause a drain on health care resources and facilities. "Both on humane grounds and economic grounds it is an important subject, particularly as the Canadian population is growing propor- tionately older," says project co-ordinator, Dr. Harold Merskey.
