• Diseases of the elderly,
in which intellectual
failure and personality
changes occur as a result
of changes in the brain,
are being studied by an
interdisciplinary
research, team at the
University of Western
Ontario.
Research done by the
UWO Dementia Study
Group, comprised of
faculty members from .
the Departments of
Psychiatry, Medicine and
Pathology, „ is being
supported by a two-year
$40,000 grant from the
UWO Academic
Development Fund.
Dementia is a condition
affecting about 10 per
cent of the population
over 65. It is charac-
terized by memory and
- judgement loss as, weJ, s
loss of control of bodily
functions.
The aim of the research
is to establish quan-
titative relationships
between dementia and
changes in the brain,
ultimately providing a
basis for the study of
biochemical or other
disturbances responsible
for the illnesses.
Widespread support of
the study group is
recognition of the im-
portance=,of, changes in
the brain and dementia
produced in some elderly
persons. Not only is it an
unpleasant and
debilitating -disease but it
is one which can cause a
drain on health care
resources and facilities.
"Both on humane
grounds and economic
grounds it is an important
subject, particularly as
the Canadian population
is growing propor-
tionately older," says
project co-ordinator, Dr.
Harold Merskey.
