1 IMPORTED SALT.
Alert readers may
, wonder where the salt
came from, 14 years
before the deposits here -k4
were discovered. It was
imported; Gordon Muir
thinks the source
Was likely in -'New York
state. It would likely
reach Goderich from
Detroit, with which there
was much commerce by
water before the railway
arrived.
The account" book
records a purchase by
Alfred W. Otter, "self,"
and another "by son," the
latter being Willie, the
future commanderof
Canadian troops in South
Africa and later general
in command of all,.
Canadian militia.
James Tewsley, who
had worked for Dr.
Dunlop, bought tobacco, ,
snuff, a barrel of salt and/
five quarts of whiskey.
A.T. Montgomery (per

pounds of moist sugar,
two pourids loaf sugar,
two pounds of cheese and
one of; coffee, for a total
price/of seven shillings 11
pence.
William Robertson,
tailor, purchased a..
shilling and threepence i
worth of gin and +
borrowed a similar sum •
from the merchant -it
says here.
Mary Watson came in ,.
for a mousetrap. Wat-
son's second daughter
was Mary.
The merchant had a
helper by the name of
Joseph Cooke, whose
salary from August 1,
1850, to July 1, 1$52, at 40
pounds a year, amounted
to 76 pounds, 13 shillings
and fourpence. Watson
evidently paid part in
cash and gave a demand
note for 40 pounds four
shillings and nine pence.
Thomas Saunders
bought two plugs of
tobacco. He is not
identified. The father of
Agit Saunders of the
Organ Company was
James, and he was a
merchant here.
