Mrs. -Ellie Beirnes
BY THE
REV. R.J. CROCKER,
ST. GEORGE'S
ANGLICAN CHURCH
You can't hang a•man
for being stupid,"So they
say.
Yet people do such
irresponsible things. A
few years ago I read a
newspaper report of a
man who built a boat. I
remember the story very
well, because I. built a
small boat the same year,
and the description of his
craft fitted mine very
closely.
The boat was 111/2 feet
long, with a flat bottom,
and made of plywood. It
was designed to hold
certainly no more than
three adults or, at the
most, 600 pounds weight,
and 'to be driven by a
motor no larger than
seven and a half hor-
sepower.
He put it in the water
somewhere in the Lake
Simcoe area, powered it
with a 25 horsepower
outboard, and, loaded it
with three adults and
several children, and
took it for a trial cruise.
You can probably guess
what happened. He
overturned the boat in its
own wake, and several
people were drowned,
Following the inquest,
it was recommended that
the boating regulations
be strengthened and
enforced, but so far as, I
know, no action was
taken against the man
who was so foolish as to
overload and overpower
his small boat. As I said,
you can't hang a man for
being stupid. `
Was he a murderer?
Not exactly. He wasn't,
we would suppose, a
deiit erate killer. He
didn't take a boat -load of
people out with the in-
tention of drowning them,.
Like the hunter with the
gun that wasn't supposed
to be loaded yet ac-
cidentally fired and killed
someone, he was
careless, foolish,
irresponsible, and.
thoughtless. But he didn't
mean to do it.
Imagine how you would
feel if you had done such
a thing. How would you
face the survivors, or the
'mourners? You would
say, "I didn't mean to do
a.t....,And.. you. wo:.rtd...,hope,.
to be_ forgiven. If you are
a Christian person, you
would seek forgiveness of
God, and you would say,
"Lord, I didn't mean to'
do- it." And you would
wish it hadn't happened,
and that somehow you
had the chance to do it
,ever again without the
horrible results. And all
the while you would know
that there is no possibility
of retracing your steps
and correc„t.ing,,,,,,..•y,our
foolish mistakes.
We all have to endure
the consequences of our
actions.. God made us to
be responsible people,
who know what we are
doing. Of course, we
know very well that we
cannot see all the results
of every casual action we
take, or the slightest
ward we say, ahead of
time: We are fallible
human beings. We do
make m-istakes " in
judgment, and errors in
calculation. Never-
theless, it remains true
that a great many of the
tragedies that do happen,
occur as a result of sheer
• stupidity and negligence.
The summer holidays
are ahead of us. I pray
that your holidays will be
very happy ones indeed. I
hope ..;ti .t.• nothing
danger or tragedy
happens to spoil the
season for you. .They will
probably not hang you for
being stupid: but you
may live to regret it.
Take care. The life you
save may be your own.
