Force has completed its
study of regional
government in Ontario
and found widespread
dissatisfaction among the
public.
Liberal Leader Stuart
Smith revealed the fin-
dings of his caucus
committee in a speech on
Wednesday, June 21 to
the Annual Conference of
Municipal Clerks and
Treasurers of Ontario. He
said the eight -member
group, created last fall,
came to the conclusion
that the Government of
Ontario erred in 1969
when it tried to impose a
Metro Toronto govern-
ment structure on other
regions of the province.

Goderich Township Council meets
Goderich Legion Branch 109 hosted their annual fishing trip for the war
veteran's from London's Westminster Hospital on Wednesday, June 21.
Here, Rose Sheardown of the Legion ,Ladies' Auxiliary baits a hook for
veteran John Plume. About 45 veterans made the trip and after fishing in the
afternoon, they were fed supper in the Legion Hall by the Ladies' Auxiliary.

property. Council passed
a motion which stated it
was unwilling at this time
to initiate proceedings to
pass a spot zoning by-law
which would give Mrs.
Parks permission to
establish a mobile home
for a residence on part lot
38, Maitland Concession.
Council passed a
motion that J.M. Driver
be permitted to continue
his trailer camp
operation at its present
size and site but if he
wishes to expand, he
must comply with the
township's trailer camp
by-law.

on a meeting with
Colborne Township
regarding the use of the
fire tanker in. Ashfield
Township. No motions
were recorded regarding
this matter.

said.
It identified five
problems with 'the
present system: absence
of a community of in-
terest necessary for the
combination of urban and
rural areas; more costly
but less efficient services
because of added
bureaucracy and over -
servicing; distorted
representation on
regional councils;
remoteness of govern-
ment and: loss of ac.;
countability to the public
involved; and ineffective
land use planning.
The Liberal committee
emphasized that no single
structural solution is
appropriate for all areas
of Ontario and that each
area of the province
should be treated as
unique.
Dr. Smith said copies.of
the report were being
• sent from his Queen's
Park office to the mayors
and reeves of Ontario's
over 800 local
municipalities for their
comments before final
adoption by the Liberal
caucus.
