We Treat You Royally.
It's not a slogan for the
Royal Bank nor is it a
commercial theme for
Monarch margarine.
It's a phrase being used
as part of a two year
'integrated promotional
program by the Ontario
Ministry of Industry and
'jtourism in an attempt to
wipe out this province's
1.6 billion dollar tourism
deficit.
"We're really pushing
this thing and we want to
stress how important
tourism is to our
economy," ' Says Chris
George, Tourism
/Industry Consultant with
the Ministry. Mr. George
has been busy
distributing buttons,
decals, place mats;'`
posters and, pamphlets
displaying the slogan to
businesses around town,
especially those
businesses which deal
with a lot of tourists such
, as restaurants, motels
and gas stations.
Tourism consultant,
Brenda Stewart of the
Welcome Centre in
Goderich says, "We're
not saying Goderich
people aren't friendly.
They're known to be very
friendly."
But Canadians on the
• whole, over the past few
years, have developed an
image of not being very
friendly to tourists in.
their country.
John Rhodes, Minister
of Industry and Tourism,
says the "treat visitors
royally" promotional
program is a highly
positive way of attacking
wheat he thinks has
become the most serious
problem in our service
industry -- the attitudes of
some people towards
visitors. It is not so much

they are unwelcome, he
says, it is just that so
many,, people whose
livelihood depends on
visitors, don't seem to
