KELLER The Maitland Cemetery Board on motion of Ed Stiles and Clayton Edward has agreed that any former resident who has moved out of town for the pur- pose of nursing home care, or for family care should be charged local, resident fee at time of burial in Maitland Cemetery. The decision followed a discussion at the June 14 meeting of the board, concerning residential and non-residentail in- terment charges. No policy had been laid down in the past, and board members agreed a policy should be set. +++ Persons paying a parking ticket 'in 'Goderich will now be paying $3 instead of $2. At a recent traffic committee meeting, it was agreed that• the cost of paperwork in processing any parking ticket, and its subsequent non-payment with a resulting court ap- pearance is costing the town money. "There is considerable clerical and ad- ministrative work necessary after the parking tag has been issued," the report said, "and costs have risen over the years. But the parking tag fine has remained at the same level." Chief Pat King advised the committee that other towns are increasing their parking tickets charges, too. The town received all money from parking tickets. The discussion brought up another contentious issue ... parking meters. Councillor Stan Profit feels the feasibility of parking meters should be examined, in terms of costs, expected revenues, etc. It is estimated that 380 parking spaces, all with parking meters, would create a substantial_ amount of revenue. + Town council has concurred with a suggestion from the Community Development Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Housing to proceed with the senior citizens housing units at the corner of West and Waterloo Streets on the basis of a five storey structure. It was explained this would allow for ac- ceptable parking and landscaping because the taller building would require less ground space. Another option was outlined for a four storey building of reduced site coverage, with . a resulting reduction in the number of units. Council's decision will now allow the housing action committee to circulate a zoning bylaw to all residents within 400 feet of the new structure. If there is no objection to the plans, Councillor Don Wheeler feels the project would move quite quickly from this point. If there are objections, the project could be tied up for some time in Ontario Municipal Board hearings. Mayor Deb Shewfelt told council it was his personal opinion the project would not start under any circumstances until 1980. Councillor Wheeler said there would be no trouble at all in filling the senior citizens units once they are built, and suggested the town would be looking for the site for another such building in the future. + + + There will only be two council meetings during July and August. The July meeting is July 10 and at that meeting., representatives of Transport Canada will be in attendance to discuss the proposed runway at the airport. + ++ Council has accepted a tender for the roofing at the town hall and at the public library. The contract was awarded to Lawrence Roofing, Goderich, for $11,450. +++ Andy Boutilier was appointed by bylaw Monday evening as building inspector for the town of Goderich. This will be a part-time position. Councillor Stan Profit questioned °why Ken Hunter, works com- missioner, was not doing the work of the building inspector since that was part of the job of which he was hired. .Council was advised the work load in the office is too heavy for one man, and that the services of a part-time person are required. Deputy -reeve Eileen Palmer said even with the additional help, the town is benefitting financially by Hunter's work. "Mr. Hunter is saying this municipality a great deal of money," Palmer told council. Councillor Dave Gower said many councillors felt former building inspector Roy Breckenridge was not as busy as he said he was, but it is now proven the work is there for one and one-half persons. He suggested that in the future, even more staff would be required. Councillor Bob Allen said that under the new buildi-ng code, seven inspections are required on one dwelling, where in the past only one in- spection was ever done. "We are liable for inspections," said Gower. + + + Krohmer Drive is to be paved, the cost of $7,000 to be shared equally between the town and Conklin Lutnber Limited. The work is to be scheduled through the Commission of Works, Ken Hunter. Deputy -reeve Eileen Palmer made council aware of a sewer problem on that street which she Meet The Press Gang of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109. (photo by Jeff Seddon) They greeted Saguenay's crew BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER Ahoy you landlubbers. Make way for The Press Gang of Goderich's Branch 109, Royal Canadian Legion. That was ..the cry Sunday when HMCS Saguenay burst through the fog into Goderich h.abor. Smartly and efficiently, the five members of The Press Gang secured the ship • and welcomed the crew to town. They are the only authorized group in Canada - with the ex- ception of an organization in Halifax - charged with the official welcofn.ing duty. Two former navy men - Ed Stiles and Ed Tonks spearhead The Press Gang in Goderich. 'Historically, the press gang was a group of seamen whose job it was.. to go ashore and enlist volunteers for sea duty. Traditionally, volun- teers are difficult to find so The Press Gang would shanghai unsuspectigg victims, beat them up, carry them aboard, and sail away with them. The next morning, the ship ,. had plenty of deckhands. The Goderich Press Gang wears the original jolly Tars, the uniform of the sailor in the time of Lord Nelson. Only five such uniforms are available in Goderich so the unit has remained at five strong. But, says Ed Stiles, they hope to get 15 more Jolly Tars uniforms ... and 15 more men to fill them. Three other members of The Press Gang in "said should be corrected before paving. No curbs and gutters are planned at this time. +++ The town `will con- tribute $3,000 towards Founder's Day on June 29 and Canada Week - celebrations in Goderich. But it was further stipulated by council that any costs incurred. ove`P and above the $3,000 would be taken out of the tourist committee budget. There will be two dances on The Square the evening of June 29 when the area will be roped off. +++ Dr. Karl Campbell, the dentist now occupying the second floor of the municipal building, will be advised to seek new quarters for his office as soon as possible. The space is required by the Commissioner of Works, Ken Hunter, and his staff, Deputy -reeve Eileen Palmer told council. She said Hunter works in "limited space now" and it is "feasible and economical" to get additional space in the municipal office by taking over the second floor. Councillors agreed it would be', fair with Campbell, recognizing that finding new ac- commodation in Goderich might be dif- ficult. + + + Gabor Fisher of the ee-itternational Society for Krishna Consciousness Inc. has written to Goderich ,.Town Council asking for a definition of "filed". Fisher, had requested permission. for Krishna missionaries to distribute literature and solicit donations IA, Goderich. The letter was' received and filed. Clerk Larry McCabe was instr, pcted to write back to Fisher advising him that no action had been taken on the letter. + +± Council has agreed to Goderich are Barry Whetstone', a former lake seaman; Leonard Fisher, formerly a soldier; and Roy Straughan. "You could say we have the tri -services involved," said Stiles. A real thrill for Stiles and Tonks on Sunday evening was to be per- sonally greeted by the skipper of Saguenay, Terry Milne. "He recognized us as having, worn The Jolly Tars," beamed Stiles. "That was really nice." waive frontage charges in the NIP Area 3, Gloucester Terrace, Cambria Road and Napier ' Street for sanitary sewer in- stallation. A letter from D.C. Scott and Jon Ginn explained that residents of this area have ,been paying for sewer service for the past several years "as if it had existed". They suggested that the frontage charges should be waived or eliminated for all existing residents and that only the connection fee should apply. .Council concurred, OisOn's Gravel Pit DUNGANNON, ONT. 529-7942 4110,O4®d 4,170AMP 41111, sAAMP' as' .N4 PRICES ARE PER TON t300 ons SANDY FILL B-2 GRAVEL B-1 GRAVEL DUST OR SAND 4" UNDER STONE ROAD GRAVEL CEMENT GRAVEL 5/8" 3 STONE .30c .40c .50c 1.20 1.80 100 Load tons Primo ' .40c .50c ,60c 1.20 1.30 1.35 1.90 .44c .54e .64c 1.00 1.24 1.34 1.39 1.94 OUR DELIVERY CHARGE IS LESS Dozer and scraper available for a good leveling job Are Now Equipped For Bulk Deliveries Of No Lead Gas Watch next week's paper for news on ..w+.w:wwwavw+Kawn n .W VY. bY.Jf.:iCJk:ry'b'.<W".•ld:?<.f:),:,+9'&.VCt!l/i:t'iii'.Y.:% aRilflD of Chisholm .
