tank
needs
paint
BY JEFF SEDDON •
The Goderich Public
Utilities Commission
learned Thursday night
that the town's water
storage tower is badly in
need of a paint job, on the
inside.
The commission
received a report from
Ran Steel Works Ltd., of
Bolton, after the firm had
cleaned and inspected the
250,000 gallon elevated
tank. The report in-
dicated that the tank was
• in good condition overall
but was in need of a
sandblasting on the in-
terior and a coat of paint.
The firm was hired by
the PUC to clean and
inspect, the tank and
report on its condition.
Workers shovelled from
four to five inches of
heavy sludge from the
interior of the tank and
inspected the metal
surfaces inside and out.
The exterior of the 30
year old tank is in good
condition according to the
report. The only
recommendation made
was the installation of a
safety cage on the ex-
terior ladder, which is
estimated to cost $4,500.
The interior work was
estimated to cost $17,500
and is expected to take
two weeks to complete.
PUC manager Al Lawson
told the commission that
according to file in-
formation the interior of
the tank had never been
painted. He said it was
last cleaned in the 1950's.
Lawson said the tank
would have to be drained
to have the work done and
pointed out that water use
in the summer months
prevented the com-
mission from having the
work done then. He said
the_ painting would have
to " be done while"the
weather is still warm
enough to permit the
paint to dry properly. He
suggested that the
commission schedule the
work for late August or
early September.
Commissioner Len
Sheardown suggested
that Lawson arrange for
the job now to avoid
delays causedby not
allowing enough Lead
time for contractors. He
said the commission
should leave contractors
enough time to permit
them to work the job in.
Commissioner Jim
Peters asked how rigid
the cost estimates of Ran
were. He said the
commission may save
some money by checking
out various firms for
prices.
Lawson said the price
reflected the type of job
to be done. He said the
equipment needed was
heavy pointing out that
many firms advertising
sand blasting don't have
equipment heavy enough
claiming some of it
"wouldn't take scale off a
tea kettle".
The commission in-
tends to ask the co-
operation of the residents
of Goderich during the
time the tank is left
'empty reminding home
owners that the water
pressure in the town's
water supply system may
fluctuate as a result of the
stank being taken out of
service.
Brief
interlude

Production workers at
Dearborn Steel Tubing
got an unexpected spring
break this week when a
shortage of steel at the
plant forced a temporary
layoff.
Bob Brown, president
of - Dearborn, said
Tuesday the steel ship-
ment is t expected
Thursday and workers ,
will be back at the plant
Monday morning.
"Everything is great
here," he said. "We just
experienced a little bit of
a problem on delivery of
steel."
The Goderich Fire Department was called out
about 11:45 p.m. on Saturday to battle a blaze at
Lamb's Discount Gas Bar located at the corner of
St. David Street and Cambria Road. When the
firemen arrived, the building was completely
engulfed in flames which they fought for about an
hour. The exact amount of damage is still un-
determined but the building was completely gutted.
Fortunately the fire didn't spread to the gas pumps.

"There's a bit of
politics too," said Peters.
If the commission is
going to spend some
money it may be able to
soften the blow by of-
fering a break in in-
surance rates."
Cowie explained that
the survey is normally
done on a municipality in
a seven to ten year cycle.
He said surveyors will be
' asking about changes in
the town's water' system
and will be taking a good
look at the fire depart-
ment. He said he un-
derstood that since the
last survey done in
Goderich the fire
department upgraded its
communication system
and had purchased some
new equipment.
He said the
classification is done on a
scale from one to ten and
pointed out that the size
of a municipality and its
financial situation is
taken into account. He
said the classification is
common in North
America and that only
one municipality, Los
Angeles, has a
classification of one:
"The survey won't
result in any recom-
mendations," said Cowie.
"All we do is compile
needed information, do
flow tests at various
points in the town's water
supply system, check into
a type of buildings, con-
struction materials,
location and purpose and
put all the information
together for the
classification."
He.. added that his group
has no bearing on the
insurance rates. He said
the classification is
strictly confidential and
is not given out to any
