French grabs lead with shutout victories
BY DAVE SYKES
French Dry Cleaners
vaulted into a share of the
lead in the Dunlop
Division with two vic-
tories in Industrial
League action last week.
The Cleaners dumped
Green and Parent 6-0
Sunday behind a two -hit
effort by Don McWhinney
and then blasted Graham
Electric 7-0 Monday. The
victories were the third
and fourth of the season
for French, against two
losses, and boosted them
into a tie for the lead with
Canada Company, both
with eight points.
Canada Company has
played only five games in
the schedule and has a
game in hand over
French.
The French offence
was hardly awesome
Sunday as they produced
six runs on only five hits
against two Green and
Parent pitchers.
French scored a run in
the first inning on fwo
Thunderbird errors,
added a single in the
fourth and then rallied for
four runs in their half of
the sixth inning.
Frank MacDonald
scored for French in the
first inning and Sutton
scored in the fourth on a
two -out single by Brian
McLean .to increase the
French lead to 2-0.
Sutton again sparked
the offence with a lead-off
home run in the four -run
sixth inning. Bill Gallow
followed with a double
and scored on Don
McWhinney's single.
McWhinney and McLean,
later scored on an error.
McWhinney turned in a
fine performance
limiting the Thun-
derbirds to two hits and
facing only 24 batters. He
gave up a fourth inning
single to Len Lolkman
and Dennis Mfskie

other batter reached base
and that was on an error.
Sutton sparked the
French offence with two
hits in three trips to the
plate including the home
run. He also scored two
runs. Three other players

two in both the fifth and

The Klages brothers,
Ron and Ray, were a
thorn in the side of losing
pitcher John Verway as
they combined for four
hits, a home run each and
scored four of French's
seven runs.

Well, will you look at that. French Dry Cleaner fielder, Bill
Gallow, appears to be taking a close look at the first baseman's

Little Bowl remains tied for first
Little Bowl managed a
split in their two league
games last week that
kept them in a tie for first
place in the Maitland
Division.
Little Bowl
defeated Graham
Electric 4-1 in a league
game last Thursday and
then.` dropped a heart-
breaking 2-1 decision to
Lakeport Monday.
The win was the fourth
of the season for Little
Bowl against two losses,
good for eight points in
the standings. Three
teams, Little Bowl,
Fisher and McGees all
have eight points in the
Maitland division but
McGees have a game in
third run and Charlie
Crawford added the
fourth run in the seventh
inning, scoring on a two -
out single by Wildgen.
John Crawford went
the distance on the
mound for Little Bowl
and limited Graham
Electric to one run on
three hits. They scored
that run in the second
inning as Phil Black
reached base on an error
and scored on Steve
Haggitt's double.
Crawford also gave up
a first inning double to
-Mark Frayne and a
fourth inning single to
Black. John Verway was
tagged for the loss giving
up four runs on six hits.
Wildgen and Snell led
the Little Bowl six -hit
attack with two hits
apiece. Wildgen also
scored two runs and
drove in a third.
Lakeport Steelers
prevented Little Bowl
from taking over first
place in the Maitland
Division with a close 2-1
victory, Monday.
It was the second one -
run ball game Lakeport
was involved in this week
as they dropped a 1-0
decision to Canada
Company, Sunday.
Lakeport scored both
their runs in the first
inning and then had to

first inning by reaching

wild pitch. He scored on
Wayne Draper's single
and Draper raced home
on Ed Jones' two -out
single.
That was almost the
extent of Lakeport's
offence in the game as
losing pitcher Terry
Powell stopped the
Steelers on two hits the
rest of the way.
Little Bowl narrowed
the Lakeport lead to a

inning as Wildgen singled
and later sco-red on

Industrial League action,
Sunday.
Lakeport right fielder
Brian McKenzie threw
the ball past the screen
and out of play with two
out in the seventh inning
of a scoreless game that
allowed Tom O'Brien to
score the winning run.
The play started in-
nocently as Wayne
Draper retired the first
two Company"' hatters in
the bottom of the seventh
inning with the teams
deadlocked at zero. Then
O'Brien laced a two -out
single and raced to third
as Rick Whetstone
followed up with a single
to right.
McKenzie retrieved the
ball hit by Whetstone in
right field and as O'Brien
faked to go home from
third McKenzie fired it
past the screen.
