Saturday, May 27 was a
special day for the nurses
who have graduated from
Guelph General Hospital
over the years. That was
the day of the Annual
Alumnae Banquet, held
at the Cutten Club,
College Avenue, Guelph.
Several grads from this
district attended --Joan
Hibbert, Hazel Thompson
and Jean Scott all from
Goderich and Jean
Livermore from Clinton.
There were 265
members present. One of
the oldest nurses at-
tending was a graduate of
"the 1912 class. Several
were in the class of 1928
(50 year grads). It was
the 40th anniversary for
Jean Livermore. Six of
her classmates (class of
• 1938) were there from
Palmerston, Walkerton,
Chatham, Pembroke and
Guelph.
Mrs. Margaret
McKinnon, an alderman
of Guelph City Council,
addressed the graduates.
From reports, it was a -
most enjoyable reunion.

• W.E. Elliot of Goderich
tells us . that Thomas
Delaney of Don Mills
possesses a trophy which
was "presented to
captain A.M. Ross of
Goderich Garrison
Artillery, by men of the
battery on January 5,
1865". He would like to
learn its history.
The main facts, as he
has been informed, are
related in Book 2 of Huron
Early Houses and Their
Families, wherein is a
chapter about Alexander
M. Ross. In 1860, when
militia units were being
organized all over Upper
Canada, Ross, who was
Huron County treasurer,
organized the artillery
unit and in 1865 took it to
Sarnia to help repel
Fenian attacks. Early the.
following year the
presentation of this
trophy to the com-
manding officer was
made by Lieutenant
J.V.S. Kirk.
The late Cockburn
Hays had on the desk of
his Montreal Street office
a trophy, similarly in-
scribed, but only two or
three inches in height. It
was in the shape of a
mini bullet, with
miniature crossed' rifles
on the top. Mr. Delaney's
is seven and a quarter
inches tall. A reasonable
supposition would be that
a numb- „'N' miniatures
were a•e, says Mr.
Elliott.
As to the original, it
may have been inherited
by Charles C. Ross, a son
of Captain A.M. Ross,
who practised law here
with Cameron, Holt and
Cameron and afterward
in Toronto. Perhaps it
was disposed of by his
family, continues Mr.
Elliott.
Mr. • Delaney writes
that he has had the trophy
appraised by Birks of
Toronto and has insured
it for $860. He has sent a
small color print but it
cannot be satisfactorily
reproduced:
Any information about
the trophy would be
welcomed by this
newspaper or Mr.
Delaney ,who lives at 21
Welsford Gardens,
Apartment 1010, Don
Mills, Ontario.

A Bureau on Aging, to
improve communications
between the Department
of Health and Welfare
and Canada's senior
citizens and
organizations working on
'their behalf, was recently
created.
'Health and Welfare
Minister Monique Begin
noted that the Bureau on
Aging will become the
focal point within her
department to identify
and keep abreast of the
iss}ies related to aging
and the aged. Serving as
a communications link
between federal
government, . provincial
governments and
organizations for the
aged, the Bureau will
thus become a contact
point for individuals and
senior , citizens'
organizations.
Miss Begin expressed
hope that full use will be
made, across the coun-
try, of this new "con-
nection" on aging. All
interested persons and
groups • will be advised
once the new Bureau
commences operations in
the fall.

More good news on
energy~ conservation.
progress: A plan to
asse'ss solar heating in
row housing in Southern
Ontario is now in the
design stage, the
Ministry of Energy an-
nounced recently. The
design concept calls for a
24 -unit row housing
complex using solar
energy for space and hot
water heating. Recently,
the Ministry of Housing
called for tenders for
aolar heating components
to incorporate them into
working drawings. The
Ministry of Energy is
providing funds and
technical advice related
to solar.'heating.
Among the sites under
consideration is a
proposed project in the
town of Stoney Creek,
southeast of Hamilton.
By showing how to
minimize the cost of
energy -conserving
features, the Ministry
hopes to demonstrate
ways the construction
industry can build af-
fordable energy -
conserving houses.
