HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-06-01, Page 33!zehrs) Round `n'A Well, now that we have had a good taste of hot weather - with lots more to come - we can be prepared for it with fans and air conditioners. I have certainly run into the hot weather lately having made three trips to Windsor in less than a month, hitting hot weather each time. Last weekend we had two nieces' weddings to attend down there - both at opposite sides of the city, both at four in the afternoon - I was sure, so we had to decide on • at- tending the church for the one and the reception for the other. We made real good time on the trip down, taking Highway 21 and continuing to Chatham before hitting the 401. For some reason there was " little traffic on these back roads and it \was a nice change of scenery. We had lots of time to change clothes and visit before going to the church -- we dawdled along arriving there at a quarter of four only to find everyone out in front of the church -- the wedding was at THREE! I don't know how THAT happened but anyway we were. in time for the reception and dinner in the evening - out of the terrific heat in a nicely air conditioned hotel. This was ' one of the happiest wedding parties, I have attended in a long time - you could just feel it. And, too, the hotel personnel were so nice and friendly - that helps a lot. This is something thatI have found lately -- the people serving people are going out of their way to be helpful and serve you with a smile ... in many cities and towns. Shirley'Kellers write- up last week - "A friendly smile could be worth a buck---" is trying to bring this to everyone's .at- tention. With tourism such an important part of our lives now, we have to be able to give a smile as well as expect it wherever we go. I honestly, think the merchants, the owners of the eating places, whether a full restaurant or a hamburger spot, the gas stations and every merchant hoping for customers to return to their place of business, should have a heart to heart talk with their employees regarding that little extra effort some of them need to use to be pleasant and SMILE! There is a write up I have read which says, "Remember me -- I'm the one who sits and sits while the waitress carries on with non -essentials or the folks in the clothing business ignore you to the point where you just walk out and go elsewherewhere they aren't much different - and so on to where I'm the one who laughs at your expensive ads to interest me in coming into your establishment where I would have returned oftener if only I had been treated with a Instant Friendship The warm, greeting of your Welcome Wagon hostess with "The Most Famous Basket in the World" will introduce you to our community and start you on the way toward new and lasting friendships. If you are new in town, call eicam*is Phone 324-6654 and 524-9676 t ...with Martha few kind words and a smile while I was there the first time." No one wants people being too pushy - but a friendly smile can mean a great deal to everyone Martha Rathburn ap- pears weekly in The Signal -Star and "Have a nice day" which you hear everywhere you go in tourist conscious Florida, begins to mean a nice day to you after all. There are so many ways of making a visitor want to return to your town again - and if they don't return they have already told many people of their pleasant sojourn in your area that others will want to make the journey. Over the years I have been one of Goderich's biggest boosters. I have shown more • people around this town often going as far as Pipers Dam and Benmiller and Saltford to prove that this is a nice place sto live. It didn't hurt a bit to smile and say a few words. It wasn't necessary to get chummy with strangers and you wouldn't believe how often this frien- dliness has bounced back. I have really enjoyed it - I'm sure you will too. Don't forget this Friday night, June 2 is the Highland Dancers' recital at MacKay Hall, North Street. The .girl's softball team, ' the Pirettes" lady Pirates) are trying to raise money to buy sweaters. They are having a craft and bake sale at Port Albert Christ Church this Saturday, June 3.
