SUNDAY SCHOOL
There has always been
a Sunday School in
connection with the
' church, says Mrs.
Feagan in her report. A
Mr. John Elliott, once
recalled reciting the most
verses of scripture in the
Sunday School when the -
church -was on the
Commons, she says. He
was not so happy about
his reward for this --which
was that he had the
privilege of helping to
take up the collection in
church --a dubious honor
for he did not want to go
along with a little box on
the end of a stick used for
the purpose.
In the early 1900s there
were still
"classmeetings" held at
10 a.m. on Sunday
mornings. They were
preparatory services
where members gave
their testimony and if any
seemed hesitant, they
were admonished to do
better. The leaders had to
be approved. In early
-days even those whose
names were added to the
church roll, possibly after
. special evangelistic
services, were on trial
and if for any reason they
were judged unworthy,
their names were
dropped.
Through the years,
evangelistic services at
Victoria Street .,Church
were held frequently,
occasionally by widely
known evangelists such
as Crossley and Hunter or
Miss Williams (Mrs.
McKinley) who preached
at the church's an-
niversary services in
1928.
Also of interest in that
year is a note printed in
the Victoria Helper (a
publication of the church
at one time) that shows
how much prices have.
changed over the years.
It reads: "The Ladies'
Aid will- again this year
on Thanksgiving, Mon-
day night, November 12,
put on a hot goose supper
in the basement of the
church. The saline loyal
support which ',Jim given
last year to make our
supper a success is asked
for this year. The ad-
mission is 65 cents with a
concert of high merit
following."
There had been a
Young People's Society
for a number of years at
Victoria Street Church
but in 1891 it was
organized as the Epworth
League. Also prayer
meetings were held on
Wednesday nights at the
church for many years
but attendance at these
gradually decreased in
.later years until finally'
they were discontinued.
Mrs. Feagan says in
her report, 'I do not
recall the first time I
came to Sunday School
here (Victoria Street) but
have been told that my
sister thought me too
young to bring, but I
darted after her, thus she
was obliged to keep me
and felt quite humiliated
because I fell asleep...As
we grew older and moved
from class to class we
learned many lessons and
passages of scripture
which have been so
comforting and helpful
down through the journey
of life. How grateful we
are to those who have
spent so much time in
Sunday School work.
Time nor memory would
not permit us to mention
names past or present."
She continues, "There
were two events of great
importance in the
year...the Sunday School
Picnic and the Christmas
Concert... maybe h should
have said three because if
we didn't get to the
Thanksgiving Supper
maybe we could go to the
10 cent dinner which was
served the next day to use
the food left over from the
night before."
"Rally day, when we
went up class by class
into the Church was not
appreciated," recalls
Mrs. Feagan, "but I do
remember one particular
Rally Day when one of
the girls was to sing Joy
1
to the World and at the
end of the first line burst
out crying which I didn't
think was very joyful!"
Mrs. Feagan also
remembers that the boys
wore short pants until
they were well into their
teens and were very self-
conscious when they
made their first ap-
pearance at Sunday
School after donning long
trousers.
For many years
there
was an evening service as
well as a morning service
at the church, says Mrs.
Feagan. Sunday seemed
like a long day after
having attended ychurch
in the morning and then
having dinner with
grandparents, aunt or
friend, followed by a walk
before Junior League at 2
o'clock, Sunday School at
3 and then walking two or
three miles home for
supper, she says.

During the years there
have been thriving
Mission Bands, Baby
Bands, CGIT girls and
other girls which trained
and prepared many for
