Without curiosity there
could be no science, for
science consists of the
answers men find to
questions they ask about
the world they live in.
Three hundred years
ago you couldn't have
found a man with more
curiosity than Anton van
Leeuwenhoek, a dry -
goods merchant of Delft,
Holland. People laughed
at him because he
wondered aloud about the
magnifying glass he used
in examining cloth.
Why he wanted to
know, could a little bit of
glass magnify as much as
ten times? How was such
glass made? Could it be
Made to enlarge even
more? To find out, he
learned to grind glass. He
ground lenses finer and
clearer than any yet
made, and the images -
they showed•were bigger.
He turned his magic
glass on all kinds of tiny
objects: a •flea's leg, a
hair, an insect's stinger.
No human eye had seen
these in detail before.
What he observed he
wrote down carefully,.
making sktillful
measurements and exact
drawings. .
All the while he went on
grinding glass. At last he
had a lens so perfect it
enlarged 270 times. What
to put under it, he won-
dered. A drop of water?
What could be seen in a
drop of water under the
lens that could not be
seen by the naked eye?
But Leeuwenoek took
nothing for granted. He
placed a drop of water
under his lens, still
doubting that it would
reveal anything. What he
saw made him gasp in
astonishment and look
again. Here was an ocean
teePning with life!
In this. ocean were
thousands, perhaps
millions of writhing,
slithering creatures. Yet
when Leeuwenhoek held
the jest tube away from
his magic lens, he found
only the same -clear drop
of water he had placed in
it. These strange animals
were so small that they
disappeared in the depths
of their miniature ocean,
just as fish are hidden in
the Atlagtic and Pacific.
With great excitement
Leeuwenhoek scoped up
drops of water from
everywhere from the
Delft canals, from the
street, from his well.
Each, when enlarged,
was a sea filled with
strange creatures.
Two hundred years
went by before scientists
learned that many of his
microscopic creatures
were germs which cause
disease. Even so, his.
discovery was hailed in
his own lifetime.
From all over Europe
people .came to peer
through his wonderful
Tense.,. He was elected a
member of the Royal
Society of London to
which the famous
scientists of that day
belonged. His notes to the
Royal Society, written
until he died at the age of
91, are -vivid examples of
the questioning mind that
cannot rest until it has the
right answers,
A.drop of water is an ocean - alive with creatures

An elderly reader paid almost 5300 for a
Sonoid deluxe heat and massage pad from a
door to door salesman representing the
Dominion Therapy Company from
Downsview, Ontario.
The reason our reader bought this pad
was to ease leg pains, however in the in-
struction book that came with the pad it
stated that, it should not be used by anyone
with peripheral vascular disease. -He
contacted his docctor and was told by him,
that he didn't recommend it for him. He
then sent a letter explaining all this to the
company and requesting a refund. His letter
of almost 2 months ago still remains
unanswered.
We have written on our reader's behalf
and are prepared to put him in touch with
the Ontario Ministry of Consumer
Relations, if necessary.

I've never ever written .to a, complaint
columnist before, but I'm so B.:4 mad that
I' willing to try anything!
Almost a year ago I parted with $650 for a
human hairpiece which was supposed to be
guaranteed for. four--. years. Well in four
months it started shedding hair very
rapidly and the rip-off came when I tried tem
return it and was told, that it was my fault
for not properly, looking after it.
They said that if I wanted it repaired, I'd
have to pay to get it done, as their ("so
called") guarantee didn't cover, "damage
due to negligence." I vehemently deny this,
but how do I get my money back?

The Consumer Protection Act
The Consumer Protection Act is among
the most important pieces of legislation
ever handed down by'the Ontario Govern-
ment. It is designed to do just what its title
implies — to protect YOU, the consumer,
from problems you may encounter when
purchasing goods or'services or borrowing
money.
The Act protects the consumer as far as
the law goes. The best guarantee you have
in not getting "sold bill of goods" is your
own awareness of various laws designed to
protect you.
Common sense is your best defence.
The Act is administered by The Consumer
Protection Bureau. Designed to protect
consumers' rights and privileges under
Ontario law.
