SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT EXPANSION - Township of Colborne Benmiller Estates Corporation The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has 'received an application by Benmiller Estates Corporation for appr,,al of an expansion of the existing sewage treatment plant proposed to be located on Lot 1, Concession 1, in the Town- ship of Colborne to serve The Benmiller Inn. The Environmental Assessment Board will conduct a public hearing to obtain information and to hear the views of the public so that it can make recommendations in respect of the proposed expansion of the sewage plant. Written and oral submissions may be made to the Board at the hearing. The Board will not consider any submissions regarding the proposal after the hearing has been closed. (photo by Dave Sykes) Newspapers on micro -film John Stafford, Deputy -reeve of-Howick who is also chairman of the Huron County Library • Board, reported Friday that two films of the Huron District Assessment Rolls for the years 1842 to 1848 have been presented to the county library by the University of Western Ontario Library System. This gift was received as thanks for the library's co-operation in assisting with the ' micro -filming of the Clinton News -Record. Warden Gerry Ginn said the News -Record filming is the first step in an effort to update the recorded history of Huron County: It is- to be continued to present day, county council agreed and a student is to be hired to complete the collation of the material under the guidance of Jerry Fremlin, a volunteer who has done this work in the past. The project is to be completed by September 30, 1978 and the cost is to be paid from the History Project Budget. ownshend speaks at W.I. The May meeting of Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute was held in Colborne Township Hall on Thursday May 25. President, Mrs. R. Buchanan, opened the meeting welcoming all present, with guests from Auburn and Blyth Institutes and visitors from Colborne District and all joined in, the opening exercises. Brookside news BY BRENDA HENDERSON AND DIANE GIBSON Field Day was held at Brookside on Friday, which was a beautiful' sunny day - a little on the warm side for some of the events - and almost everyone had a sunburn by the end of the day. The winners in the different events were as follows: senior boys - first - Jim Young, second - Bernie Bargsma, senior girls - first - Nancy Moran, second - Linda Taylor; intermediate boys - first - Robin Markham, second - David Sproul; intermediate girls - first - Peggy Gibson, second - Janice Pollock; junior boys first - Rocky Little, second - John Curran; junior girls - first - Wiltpa Vandervelde, second (tied) - Janice Cook, Michele Humphrey; midget boys - first - Alex West, second - John Vandervelde; midget girls - . first - Darlene Kuik, second - Lorelee Howes; primary boys - first - Scott Hackett, second - Larry Thomas; primary girls - first - Shelley Good, second - Donna Raynard. Suzanne Kirkland broke a bone in her foot and is wearing a cast but was able to go on a bus trip on Friday with the Lucknow Band. Jim Wright had a bandage on his wrist on Tuesday after being bitten by a dog last weekend. Y Minutes of last meeting were read and adopted by the secretary, Mrs. Allan Stoll and correspondence was read and attended to. Wingham Institute will be celebrating their 75th anniversary on June 15, with a 12:30 luncheon. Any members wishing to go, contact Mrs. Buchanan. Plans were discussed for a bus trip to the Erland Lee Home the week of June 5 if possible. The June meeting will be. the Sunshine Sister Banquet which will be a pot luck luncheon at 1 p.m. on Thursday June 22 and the roll call will be a corsage for each person's Sunshine Sister. Mrs. R. Brock gave the motto which was two lovely ^ poems, "What to Plant in a Garden" and "Dandelions" - very appropriate for this time of the year. Mrs. R. Brock then introduced the guest speaker, Elaine Town- shend of Clinton who spoke on the organization of "Alpha" in Which she is actively engaged. It covers the problems of, physical barriers and things done for the handicapped. Ms. Townshend told of many things that the government and organizations are doing to try and eliminate various physical barriers that handicapped persons face which exclude them from public par- ticipation. Some examples were steps into buildings, public telephones too high for people in wheel chairs to use, curbings on the streets that wheel chairs cannot surmount, etc. Her talk was most in- teresting and her ex- planation of how she overcomes her handicap was a wonderful example of perseverance. Mrs. R. Buchanan thanked the speaker and presented her with a gift. The Graduation Banquet for Grade 8 students of Colborne Central School, was discussed and members unanimously agreed to cater to this on Tuesday, June 27 with final plans to be made at the June Sunshine Sister banquet meeting. Mrs. Allan Stoll, the delegate to the Women's Institute Officer's Con- ference held early in May at Waterloo College, gave Colborne corner Gertrude Kaitting, correspondent, 524=2076 an interesting report and thanked the members for selecting her to be the delegate. The meeting closed with the members joining in singing, The Grace and The Queen, with Mrs. Kaitting at the piano. After this, a very successful Plant Auction was held with Mrs. Dorothy Feagan as the auctioneer. During lunch several prizes were given to members. The grand- mother with the most grandchildren was Mrs. McNichol, of Blyth. The anniversary closest to May 25 was won by Mrs. G. Kaitting. The lady that baked a pie that morning was Mrs. McGowan of Blyth and Mrs. Lawlor of Auburn. The lucky cup or saucer was held by Mrs. Leatherland of Auburn, and Molly Grant of Blyth. The members and guests then enjoyed a social half hour together with lunch served by the committee. Several members of Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute . attended the Huron West Women's Institute 78th District Annual Meeting at Nile United Church on Monday, May 29 where the theme was, "Women, Where Are We in Com- munity Action?" which was very ably presented by Mrs. C. Edward of Goderich. Tiger Dunlop Institute hosted the meeting and Mrs. Earl Sherwood, Past President, extended the welcome. Others present from Tiger Dunlop Institute were Mrs. Allan Stoll, Mrs. G. Kaitting, Mrs. Henry Brindley, Mrs. E. Bogie, Mrs. J. Horton, Mrs. R. Brock, Mrs. Ann Mon- tgomery, Mrs. Maitland Montgomery and Mrs. R. Buchanan who is District Secretary. Ladies of Nile United Church supplied the delicious noon luncheon. CHURCH NEWS The group of young people from Benmiller United Church that are having the monthly paper drives will be picking up your papers this weekend, Saturday June 3. Neighbors ' and friends will be interested to know Jim is enjoying good health and wishes to be remembered to his many friends. Mr. and Mrs. William Meyers and son John of Sarnia attended the late .lames Horton funeral and renewed acquain- tances of neighbours and friends in the community.
