McGees tie for top spot with two league victories
BY DAVE SYKES
The McGee Pontiacs
vaulted into a share of the
lead in the Maitland
Division with two vic-
tories in Industrial
League softball action,
last week.

.Baiting program begins
The Huron County
Trapper's Association
learned about a fox
baiting program which
will eventually clean out
rabies in the area whets
they met in Relgrave on
April 21.
A large crowd attended
the meeting to hear Mr.
Watt, a representative
from the Ministry of
Natural Resources,
Wingham explain about
the baiting program and
also show films con-
cerning humane fox
trapping methods.
He explained to the
group that the fox baiting
program presently being
carried out will hopefully
clean out rabies in foxes
by using baits containing
anti -rabies serum. It was
reported that a large
number of fox carcasses
were turned into the
ministry for ex-
perimental purposes and
diagnosis results. A
computer sheet will be
mailed to those trappers
with the results from the
tests later in the summer.
President, Clarence
Hanna spoke briefly
concerning the Ontario
Trappers Association
convention in North Bay.
Hundreds of people from
every province in Canada
and many from the
United States attended
the event, he stated.
The election of
directors was held and
the previous officers
were elected to another
two year term. They are,
John Newans, Ross
Taylor, Len Baird,
Clarence Hanna and
Wayne Hood. Half the
board of directors are
elected each year and
Mr. Hanna chose them at
the first board meeting
after the election.
The next Ontario
Trappers Association's
sale will be held on June
22 and 23 at North Bay.
The last receiving day for
the sale will be June 12,
The May sale was can-
celled due to the cold, late
spring and the late fur
catch of muskrats and
beavers. However, prices
were strong at the April
sale.
Total sales value for
December 1977 and the
winter -spring sales of
1978 should again be close
to $15,000,000. 411 the wild
fur helps the economy of
Ontario and the other
provinces very much and
since most of the fur is
sold to world buyers, it
helps Canada's export
sales.
Note, a free holding
permit should be ob-
tained from the ministry
offices in Wingham for all
muskrats, etc., kept over
for fall sales in 1978. -by
Elmer Trick.

the season, shut -out
Graham Electric Sunday
behind the one -hit pit-
ching of Rick Sowerby
and then jumped' on
Ziebart pitcher Simon
Langlois for four home
runs Monday _. as they
handed Ziebart their fifth
loss of the season Monday
night with a 7-3 win.
The victories improved
McGees ,record to, three
wins against one loss,
good enough for a share
of first place with Little
Bowl and Fisher.
Rick Sowerby nailed
down McGees second win
of the season stopping
Graham Electric on one
hit while striking' out six.
He faced only 24 batters
in the game.
Fred Schoemaker
spoiled Sowerby's no -hit
attempt with a lead-off
double in the sixth inning,
but he failed to score as
Sowerby nailed the next
three batters. Graham
Electric had only( two
other base runners1n the
game as Mark Frayne
walked in the second
inning and Phil Black
reached first on an error
in the fifth inning.
McGees scored single
runs in the fist and
fourth innings and added
two insurance markers in
the top of the sevZnth.'1''
Ron Sowerby snored in
the first inning after he
singled, went to second on
a wild pitch and scooted
home on Deb Shewfelt's
single. Harry Kerr scored
the second run in the
fourth inning reaching
base on an error and
scoring on Ken Meriam's
double.
The Sowerbys were
responsible for the two
runs in the seventh as
Rick led off with a
double and scored on
Ron's triple. Doug Spitzig
then singled in Ron for
McGees fourth run.
Ron Sowerby, Ken
Meriam and Doug Spitzig
led the McGee nine -hit
attack with two hits
apiece. Sowerby also
scored two runs.
McGees racked up
their third win of the
season Monday with a 7-3
victory over Ziebart.
McGees relied on home
run power in handing
Ziebart their fifth loss of
the season, as four of the
teams six hits off Sirpon
Lanlois, were home runs.
Doug Spitzig hit a solo
shot in the second inning
and Rick and Ron
Sowerby followed with
back to back shots in the
third inning. Ron
Sowerby hit his second, a
two -run shot, in the fifth
inning with Pat Kelly
aboard.
The home runs ac-
counted for six of McGees
runs as Langlois gave up
only a double to Ken
Meriam and a single to
Rick Sowerby the rest of
the way. But walks also
played a crucial part in
the game as Rick
Sowerby homered after
John Phillips had walked
and Ron Sowerby
homered after a walk to
Kelly.
Ziebart scored a single
run in the fourth inning as
Langlois singled in Greg
Hanson and added two in
the fifth on a two -run
double by Ron Whetstone
that scored Dave Ross
and D. Lassaline.
Ken Daer went the
distance for McGees and
was touched for only five
hits while striking out
four batters. McGees
nailed Langlois for six
hits and the Sowerby
brothers were respon-
sible for four of those.
Langlois struck out 12
batters in the game.
