Tennis Tip no. 2.
Get Set
All sports demand early and adequate
preparation from a golfer to a goalie. Tennis
especially calls for a series of preplanned moves
designed to return ground strokes safely over
the net.
Early preparation is not difficult to learn. Yet,
countless players hit the ball into the net by
rushing their strokes. To overcome this problem
a system is required to develop timing and con-
sistency. The following is one method that
beginners and intermediates can use to improve
their preparation.
First, make decisions early. Decide whether
to hit a forehand or backhand and turn your
body accordingly the instant the ball leaves your
opponent's racket: Take your racket back as
soon as the ball clears the net or you will end up
hitting the' ball late. When the ball hits the
ground on your sidestep out to plant your foot
before the stroke. Through repetition these
steps become ingrained.
As a further aid to timing try saying "hit" each
time your opponent strikes the ball, "bounce"
when it comes off the ground in your end and
then"hit when your own racket makes ball con-
tact. Eventually, you will eliminate that late
swing.
Watch beginners who constantly mishit shots.
Notice how they whip their racket around to
overcome poor preparation. By getting set
before the ball arrives, your shot is smoother,
more stylish as well as more consistenf. Little
wonder that professionals make miraculous
returns under pressure. They are ready to hit
well ahead of the actu'bl stroke.
