Puzzle puzzler
To complete the TREE puzzle, fill in the blanks with
names of animals that live in trees.
The Captain will help you with these clues: one is lazy,
one buries nuts for the winter, one eats peanuts, and one
plays dead when he is in danger.
The questions might be hard - and take a little
research:
Captain Comet will have the answers for you next
week!

Saguaro cactus
...a life saver
in the desert sun
The Science Corner
Some of the oddest but most
interesting plants in the world
grow in the desert. One of
these is the saguaro. It can
grow skyward as high as 50
feet and live for 200 years.
This green tower needs
three things to stay alive:
sun, water, and air. But there
is too much sun and too little
water in the desert and so
nature has planned won-
derful ways to even this
imbalance.
One of these ways is to give
the plant a water "storage
tank". The "tank" is right in
_the center of its pulpy stem.
Its roots are wide -spread and
some are only inches below
the surface of the earth so
that it can absorb whatever
rain falls before it is
evaporated.
When the "tank" is empty,
the plant looks all shriveled
up: after a rain, the water is
quickly drawn up from the
roots, and its pulpy stem can
expand until 90'percent of it
may be water.
The cactus lives on the
water it has stored. Many a
thirsty traveller, caught in
the desert without water, Lias
saved his life by chopping off
a cactus stem to squeeze out
the liquid it contains.
