About 130 people turned out
for the Open House of the
Group Home for the Mentally
Handicapped in Goderich last
Wednesday afternoon and
evening.
The Home, located at 200
Keays Street, is a first for the
Goderich'area. The residents,
who will be 18 years old and
over, will number eight and
there will also • be one
emergency bed, in the home.
The residents will be moving
in within the next few months.
Before moving in, they
must pass through an ad-
missions board, be native to
Goderich area and have no
past record of psychiatric
disturbances. They will be
selected as to their ability to
function on their own 'in
regards to hygiene and self-
care, etc. In other words, the
residents will be carefully
chosen to.suit both the home
and the neighbourhood. If for
some reason they don't suit
either ,after moving in, they
will be taken out again.
The mildly to moderately
retarded adult, men and
women, who will be the
residents of the Home, will be
taught life 'skills from the
very basics like cooking and
cleaning to the smallest of
details like how to make a
dentist appointment or how to
get drycleaning done. They
will, in short, be learning to

the hopes that they may
eventually live independently
and successfully integrate
into the community.
The upkeep of •the Home
will be the responsibility of
the residents who will keep it
clean. The Home has recently
been repaired, papered,
carpeted and furnished.
Further repairs, painting,
landscaping etc. will be
looked after by the residents.
The residents may also be
willing to shovel walks and
mow lawns for neighbours.
During the day, the
residents will be working out
at jobs within the normal
work force or they will be
attending the adult training
workshop .looted in the

life skills as well as doing
contract work for The
Sheaffer Pen Company. The
workshop has recently been
enlarged to include a sewing
room for women trainees, a
kiln and a workshop for

Clark, workshop manager.
They join Evelyn Carroll in
teaching the workshop

The Group Home itself will
be staffed with well trained
and qualified personnel who
will give supervised care and
training. They will teach each
resident to learn to live
together and share respon-
sibilities, as close to a normal
household and community
living as any average family
shares.
The staff will consist of
three full-time residential
counsellors and sufficient
part-time staff for coverage
in the evenings and 24 hours
around the clock on
