Athletic briefs
Due to inclement weather at the opening of the
softball season, the Goderich Industrial Softball
League will feature a doubleheader, Friday
night beginning at 7:15 p.m. Unfortunately for
the young Canada Company team they must play
in both games. They will battle Fisher at 7:15
p.m. and the French at 8:45 p.m.

Judith Gooderham Swimming Pool is now
being prepared for the swimming season and
painting is expected to be completed this week.
The Recreation Board also purchased a new
chlorinator this year. Pool supervisor this year is
Carole Stewart and she will offer leader patrol
courses during the month of June.
+++
Three summer staff have been hired to operate
playgrounds and daycamps this year. Mike
Dymond said that originally two people were to
be hired for the playgrounds but funding was
approved for three students. The staff are Paul
Schaefer, Una Costello and Giena Datema, who
workedthe playgrounds last year. They will
attend a training program at the end of June and
begin work July 3.
+++
T -ball registered 65 boys and girls for play this
summer and four teams have been established.
Practices started this week and the schedule is to
begin the first week of June with games to be
played Tuesday evening, and Saturday mornings.
+ ++
There was sufficient registration for two minor
softball teams this summer and a short schedule
will be prepared. Goderich Township recreation
representative Doug Yeo said it would likely be
possible to arrange games for these two softball
teams with township teams rather have the
same two teams play against each other for a
season.
+ ++
Bill Kirky, recreation board member, brought
up the matter of washrooms for use during ball
games at Agriculture Park. There are no
washrooms there since the grandstand was
taken down but the committee decided to ask.
Dirk Wolterbeek to open a dressing room door at
the arena during ball nights.
+ ++
The Recreation Board will look into an
elevator lift to the auditorium at the arena for
handicapped use. The cost of the project is
estimated at $18,000 but would be completely
financed by Wintario through a special grant.
+++
The Community Centre sub -committee
proposed moving the arena manager's office
from the main floor to the board room on the
second floor. The move would allow expansion of
the canteen serving area and storage area.
