Sutton blasts French to first win
Ziebart pitcher Simon
Langlois would like two
pitches back from Sunday's
game with French, if he had
his way.
The two pitches resulted in
home runs by French shor-
tstop George Sutton as he
singlehandedly dumped
Ziebart for their third loss of
the season. French won the
game 6-1.,
Ziebart held a one -run lead
in the ball ,game after the
fourth inning before Sutton
went to work.
Sutton connected with a
solo blast in the fifth inning
and then nailed a three -run
shot into left centre field in
the sixth to hammer down the
first victory of the campaign
for French.
Frank McDonald opened
the scoring in the top of the
fourth inning after he singled,
stole second, advanced on
Ron Klages single and scored
on Bill Gallow's sacrifice fly,
to centre.
Ziebart got that run back in
the bottom of the fourth in-
ning as Ron Whetstone
walked, was sacrificed to
second and then scored on an
error on a hit by Langlois.
But Sutton took control of
the game with his successive
homers that produced four
runs and lifted French to a 6-1
victory.
His fifth inning blast made
the score 2-1 for French and
then in the sixth Gallow and
Clare Harmon hit back to
back singles and Gallow
scored on an error on a ball
hit by Ray Klages. With
Harmon and Klages still
aboard Sutton put the game
away.
Ron Klages was also
productive in the offensive
department with three hits in
four trips to the plate.
Don McWhinney gave up
only three hits in recording
his first victory of the season
and he struck out five.
Langlois gave up eight hits
and struck out seven batters.
Martin's heroics habit
Green and Parent pitcher
Jim Martin wins his own ball
games.
Martin tossed a neat four -
hitter against Graham
Electric and then slammed a
fourth inning two -run homer
to lift the Thunderbirds to a 3-
2 victory.
It's becoming habit for
Martin, who last week belted
a three -run homer to lift the
Thunderbirds to a 7-5' win
over Ziebart in their first
game of the season.
Martin put the game away
for the Thunderbir* in their
half of the fifth slamming a
two -run shot with Phil Turner
aboard.
Ferguson led the Green and
Parent seven -hit attack with
two hits in three trips to the
Plate. Five other players
chipped in with one hit
apiece.
Bill Wraith had two of the
four Graham Electric hits.
John Verway"was tagged
with the loss giving up seven
hits..
Both Graham Electric and
Green and Parent return to
action tonight and they will
play Fishers and Lakeport
Steel, respectively. The first
game begins at 7:15 p.m.
Graham Electric had taken
a 1-0 lead in the second inning
as Steve Haggitt scored after
reaching base on an error. ,
Green and Parent tied the'
game in the bottom of the
third as Glen Ferguson
singled, reached second on an
error and then scored as Dick
Shoemaker reached base on
an error.
Graham Electric went out
in front again in the fifth
inning as Bill Wraith singled
and scored to give the
Electrics a 2-1 lead. But

Tennis Tip no. 1
PROPER FOOTWORK FOR.P.OWER AND ACCURACY
Beginners in tennis often wonder why good players
make the game look easy. The answer is a matter of
footwork. It is footwork, more than quickness oi' an-
ticipation, that sets up solid dependable groun-
dstrokes.
The basics behind footwork are body positioning and
weight transfer when striking the ball. First, the body
must pivot so that the shoulders are pointing at the
net much like a batter preparing at home plate. When
the body uncoils from this position, a weight transfer
occurs from the back to front foot. This action is more
commonly known as stepping into ball.
Simple movements as described above allow any
player to put power and accuracy into his shot,
without extra effort. Yet, many beginners and inter-
mediate players fail to turn fully and step toward the
oncoming ball. The diagrams below show how the
feet turn. Keep in mind that the leading foot is firmly
planted before the racket meets the ball and that the
trailing foot does not leave the ground.
A court is not needed to perfect footwork. Simply
practise in front of a mirror without a ball. The
benefits gained from repetition of these movements
cannot be over emphasized.
