Welcome Wagon hostess Joan Stiles (left) greets newcomer
Linda Ham to Goderich. Linda recently came to Goderich
from Owen Sound and was pleased to receive a visit from
the Welcome -Wagon. Mrs. Stiles carries the traditional
basket full of gifts and coupons from town merchants,

'daytime, she usually just has
an opportunity to talk to the
women.
Sometimes the loneliness of
the people hits her she says,
especially in the winter. She
often remembers those she
visits and greets them on the
street. • Occasionally she will
even make a return call. The
older people who she visits
often want her to bring her
children around for a visit.
Most of the newcomers that
Mrs. Stiles has visited have
been from cities like London,
Hamilton, Sudbury and
Toronto. Occasionally she
visits people who have moved
here from another province
and sometimes even from
another country.
Mrs. Stiles herself has lived
in Goderich since 1969. She
takes ceramics, is secretary
of the Eastern Star Lodge and
is in charge of the nursery at
their church. To become a
Welcome Wagon hostess, she
had to take a three day course
in London after which she
received a certificate. She
had first read about the
position in the newspaper. It.
required her to have her own
car and a typewriter. She had
both, so she applied for the
job. During her three day
course, she learned how to
approach people, how to bill,.
how to make up contracts for
the sponsors, how to keep the
sponsors happy, how to get
name sources, etc. She
reports to her sponsors every
week and turns in cards for
the people she has visited.
There is a supervisor who will
help the hostess if necessary.
In June there is always a big
convention for all the
Welcome Wagon hostesses
and pins are presented for the
number of years of service.
Elva Bedard is the Hi -
Neighbour . hostess in
Goderich. Hi -Neighbour is a
Canadian Company which
has been in Goderich for
about 12 years now. The first
Hi -Neighbour hostess, Betty
Reid, set up Goderich as a
new area for the company,
after she received a four day
training period. Later,
Martha Rathburn took over
from Mrs. Reid as a hostess
and then Mrs. BP -' took
over. She has been Hi -
Neighbour hostess here for
about 2t/2 years now.
Hi -Neighbour is set up on
much the same principle as
the Welcome Wagon. The Hi -
Neighbour hostess doesn't
carry a basket like the
Welcome Wagon hostess.
Instead she carries a large
folder full of coupons from
merchants and containing
literature about the town.
ENJOYABLE PASTIME
Mrs. Bedard represents her
sponsors (merchants) who in
turn pay the Hi -Neighbour
head office in Calgary. Head
office then sends Mrs. Bedard
a cheque for her work. It's•not
such a p''ofitable job with the
price of stamps and gas
going up, says Mrs. Bedard
and she acts as a hostess
more as an enjoyable pastime
rather than as a means of
employment. She really likes
meeting people.
Tatting to newcomers is
good advertisement for her
sponsors, she says.
Sometimes it's hard to get
letters of welcome from town officials, a town map and
numerous pamphlets to give to Linda. A good call, says
Mrs. Stiles, lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. (Photo by

ALTERATIONS

I recently purchased a
house which I thought at the
time was in good shape.
Recently a large crack has
appeared in one of the
basement walls and I have
found out that' the crack was
there before I bought the
house, but the previous owner
covered it up to sell the place.
I demanded my money back
but the seller says the rule,
"let the buyer beware" • ap-
plies.
The rule does not apply in
this type of . situation. You
purchased a house you
believed to be in excellent
condition. Instead you bought
one with a latent defect, which.
had been concealed by the -
vendor. This gives rise to an
error in substance between
what you contracted to buy .
and what you received.
You are entitled to recision
of the contract with .com-
pensation and damages
resulting from the con-
cealment.

My question` for "IMPACT"
is this: 1 was in an accident in
which my car was quite badly
damaged. The accident was
clearly the other driver's
fault. He refuses to pay for the
damages or even to inform his
insurance company because
he says he doesn't want his
rates to go up. He says he has
no money so it won't do any
good to sue him.
Is there no • way I can
recover the amount of the
damages to my car?
Yes! By section 225 of the
Insurance Act, if you recover
judgement against him in
court you can have his in-
surance company pay the
damages owed directly to you.

I am seeking a divorce and
want to obtain one as cheaply
as I can. It was my intention to
work through one of those "do-
it-yourself, divorce firms",
but a couple of girls where I
work have told me that they
are all a big racket.
If they are right then how
come these firms are allowed
to stay in business? Could
your column give me some
advice on this matter?
The firms that advertise do-
it-yourself divorces, do give,
(as a general rule) exactly
what they advertise, namely,
non -legal assistance to people
who wish to handle the divorce'
proceedings themselves.
In many cases this has
worked out successfully, but
in many other cases a person
has found that, for one cause
or another, a lawyer is
essential and a judge may so
indicate.
