Martin caps- -T Bird rally with blast

Jim Martin powered a
three -run blast out of
Agriculture Park in the
seventh inning to boost Green
and Parent Thunderbirds to a
7 - 5 decision over Ziebart in
the Industrial softball league
opener Sunday.
Martin's shot capped a six
run rally in the final inning
that wiped out a 5 - 1 Ziebart
lead. Simon Langlois had
controlled Thunderbird bats

Goderich Town Councillor Elsa Haydon hit the first ball at the opening game which
marked the beginning of another Industrial Softball League season on Sunday afternoon
at Agricultural Park. The ball was pitched by League president Ron Klages. Catcher is
Phil Turner of the Green and Parent Thunderbirds. There are ten teams in the League
which was formed about 1959. Every team will play,18 games before the playoffs. A
tournament is being planned for the Labor Day Weekend, says treasurer Bill Kirkey.

through six innings giving up
just three hits and fanning 12.
Ziebart jumped on Martin's
pitching in the opening inning
using two hits, a walk and an
error to grab a three run lead,
Ron Whetstone led off with a
single and moved down when
Ron Corriveau drew a walk.
Rick Duckworth used an
error to Ron Hodge to load the
bags and Simon Langlois
earned a RBI with a sacrifice
to left. Don Parker drilled a
single and Ziebart was up
three.
Hodge got one run back in
the bottom of the inning when
he singled and used an error
to first baseman Don Parker
to score on Walter Bell's shot.
Dan Duncan singled to start
off the Ziebart second and
Whetstone stepped into a
triple to score him. Duck-
worth drove Whetstone in for
the 5 - 1 Ziebart, lead that
lasted until the final inning.
Ron Allen used an error to
get on to start the Thun-
derbird rally. Glen Ferguson
singled, Hodge beat out an
error and Len Kolkman
singled Allen over. Dennis
Miskie singled Ferguson over
and Martin ended the game
with, his three run drive.
Bruce Bettles, who came on
in the sixth to replace Martin
on the mound, was credited
with the win. Betties gave up
two walks and no hits in his
one inning appearnace.
Martin was hit nine times,
gave up five runs, and got one
strikeout. Langlois was the
loser giving up seven hits and
fanning 13.

Jim Ginn ripped a three run
homer in the first inning to
carry Gord's Sports to a 4 - 2
win over Graham Electric in
the clubs' Industrial league
opener Sunday.
Ginn's drive capped a four
run burst in the bottom of the
first inning that was all Des
Courtney needed for his first
win of the campaign. Warren
Watt and Jon Ginn singled to
lead off the Gord's order and
Phil Petrie collected a RBI on
a single. Jim Ginn cleaned
house before Graham
managed to end the inning.
John Verway gave up five
hits to Gord's in the first and
settled down to fire a one
hitter across five innings.
Graham couldn't dent the
Gord's defense managing just
two runs off five hits. John
Hoy and Fraser Strong
started the Graham second
with walk -S- and Mark Frayne
drilled a double to move Hoy
Elevators double Lucknow
The Goderich Elevators
won their first game of the
season in the Huron Central
Ladies Softball League as
they doubled the Lucknow

Noisy Ladies 12-6 in a game
played in Goderich, May O.
The Elevators exploded for
seven runs in the fifth and
sixth innings and withstood a
late Lucknow rally in
recording the first win of the
season.
The teams played scoreless
through the first two innings
of the game before the
Elevators struck for four runs
in the bottom of the third
inning. Joyce Orr, Karen
McKinnon, Marg.Kovacs and
Sylvia Harman scored the
Elevator runs.
The teams exchanged a run
in the fourth inning but the
Elevators took command of
the game with five runs in the
fifth inning and added two in
the sixth for the win.
Lucknow scored two runs in
the fifth inning and added
three more in the sixth in an
effort to get back into the
game.
Bev Wright pitched a string
game for Goderich and didn't
give up a run until the fourth
inning. She struck out nine
batters and walked three.
Linda Miller led the
Elevators offensively with
four hits in as many tri,ps to
the plate. She also scored two
runs. Karen Yond, Joanne
Chambers and Joyce Orr also
scored two runs each.
The Elevators played the
Swingers Wednesday and
play their third game of the
season Wednesday, May 24
against the Goderich
Superstars.
Brookside softball scores

Softball scores at Brookside
School this week were as
follows: senior girls, Thun-
derbirds 1l -Busy Batters 9;
Heavy Hitters 6 -Hot Catchers
6; junior girls, Batters 5 -Blue
Jays 3; Expos 5 -Batters 3;
senior boys, Giants 6 -Hill
Billies 5; Cool Cats 8 -Hot
Shots 1; junior boys, Road
Runners 3 -Grand Slammers
4; Fat Cats 5 -Sluggers 2; and
Road Runners 9 -Sluggers 3.
The Grade 8 classes went to
Toronto on Friday ac-
companied by Mr. Jewitt and
Miss Trezise.
Although those par-
ticipating in the soccer
tournament in Goderich on
Saturday went in by bus in the
morning, the weather would
not co-operate and when it
rained, the tournament was
called • off and the players
returned home.

Steelers pound Gord's 15-5

Lakeport Steelers could do
no wrong Monday night in
their Industrial league opener
slamming 14 hits for 15 runs
to humiliate Gord's Sports 15-
5.
The Steelers sent 11 ren to
the plate in the first inning
and eight hits later had a 9-0
lead. Ron Miller, who went
three for four in the game
including a single and a round
tripper in the first inning,
singled to start the Steeler

Little Bowl bats came alive
in the third inning of their
opener against French
Gleaners Sunday producing a
three run burst that dumped
the Cleaners 3 - 2 in Industrial
softball action.
Terry Powell singled to
start the Bowler third and
John Crawford managed a
fielder's choice that got
Powell at second. Charlie
Crawford singled and a wild
pitch moved both down one.
Mike Wildgen scored John
Crawford with a single and
stole second to move into
scoring position. Glen
Falkiner drilled a single to
score Crawford and a
fielder's choice by Bill Black
produced the winning run.
The Cleaners managed to
shut out the Bowlers across
the final four innings but
couldn't come up with enough
offence to get back in the
game. Claire Harmon
managed one run in the sixth
when he singled and scored
on Don McWhinnney's
double. Jim McWhinney
started off the seventh with a
walk, moved to second on an
error on Frank MacDonald's
shot and scored on Ron
Klages' single. Bill Gallow
left the tying run at second -
when he popped up to first to
end the game.
John Crawford was the
winner giving up seven hits
and striking out two. Don
McWhinney took the loss with
an identical record.

to score Miller then stole
home for a two run lead.
Carman Fielder singled and
scored on Buck Million's
double. Frank Hagan used an
error to get on and Tim
McLean hit into a fielder's
choice that got ,Million at
third. Wayne Draper singled
Hagan across and Ed Jones
used an error to keep the
drive alive. Brian MacKenzie
singled McLean across and
Miller ripped his home run to
boost the Steelers to the nine
run lead.
Gord's cut the lead con-
siderably in the third with a
four run effort. Rick McLean
drew a walk, stole second and
moved to third on an error on
Des Courtney's hit. Warren
Watt singled to bring McLean
home and send Courtney to
third and Dennis Williamson
cleared the fence with a three
run shot to cut the Steelers'
lead to five.
The Steelers went right
back to work in their half of
the thrid getting two runs off
as many hits. Miller grabbed
a two out single and Ron
Ritchie drew a walk before
Fielder hammered a double
to up the Lakeport total of 11.
Wayne Draper Icifted a two
run drive over the fence and
Ritchie and Fielder added
runs in the fifth to close out
the Lakeport scoring.
Warren Watt chipped a
single in the fifth inning for
Gord's and scored on an error
on Williamson's hit after Joh
Ginn moved him around with
a single.
Brian MacKenzie posted
the win with a five hitter
striking out seven. Des
Courtney was the loser
ketting tagged for 14 hits
while striking out one
