Bishop Ragg would split Diocese
The Anglican Bishop of
Huron told about 150 clergy
and about 500 lay delegates to
the, 119th session of the
diocesan synod last Sunday
night that he's too remote
from the people he serves in
his sprawling diocese and,
would like to see the diocese
split in three, each with its
own bishop.
The Rt. Rev. T. David B.
Ragg serves about 200,000
Anglicans in 244
congregations arranged into
13 deaneries across a
territory ranging from Port
Dover to Tobermory and
from the Waterloo. Region to
Windsor. He said he only gets
to visit each parish once
every three years although
his two suffragan bishops, Rt.
Rev. M. C. Robinson and Rt.
Rev. G. H. Parke -Taylor,
help to guarantee at least one
visit from a bishop a year.
Bishop Ragg doesn't feel this
is enough contact between the
people, 174 clergy in the
diocese and the bishops.
He said there's no reason
the three dioceses couldn't
pool administrative and of-
fice staffs while decen-
tralizing the spiritual
authority of the church to
bring it closer to the people.
Witnesses plan
A number of local families
from the Goderich area will
attend the largest religious
convention in the history of
Canada. An international
assembly of Jehovah's
Witnesses is scheduled for
July 5 to 9. More than 75,000
delegates are expected to
support the gathering, which
is to be held at Montreal's
famous Olympic site.
Mr. Ralph Brodie,
spokesman for the local
Witnesses, said that this
convention will be quite
unusual. The program will be
carried on simultaneously in
seven languages: French,
English, Italian, Greek,
Portuguese, Spanish and
Arabic. Sessions will also be
held in Korean and
Ukrainian.
The convention program
will give practical in-
formation on human
relations. Marriage will be
studied in-depth and ap-
propriate counsel given to
every family member. Young
people will receive special
attention in several
discussions and talks.
According to Mr. Brodie,
one of the main features of
this assembly will be the
baptismal ceremony. The
Witnesses practice baptism
in its earliest, Christian form,
by complete water im-
mersion. Several hundred
new members will be bap-
tized in the Olympic pool.
Around 15,000 volunteers
will run the 22 convention
departments. Local residents
are welcome to attend all
sessions of this convention.
The general theme of the
gathering is: "Victorious
Faith".
Knox Presbyterian Church i
"Some thought should be
given to making dioceses of a
size one bishop could serve
adequately," commented
Bishop Ragg.
At a minimum, Bishop
Ragg wants the 13 deaneries
to be realigned into/ 16 to
make for smaller, more in-
timate gatherings. He thinks
communication and dialogue
is better in smaller units
where people get a chance to
speak. He said he hopes the
committee stu-dying his
charge will pick up on his
remarks, possibly suggesting
a study group look into the
matter.
The bishop, in his address,
castigated eight unnamed
parishes for making
unilateral decisions to pay
their priests above wage
scale when the parishes are in
financial truuble. The base
rate pay for Anglican
ministers ranges from $6,800
a year for newly -ordained
priest to $9,300 after 17 years,
a scale that adds about $100
for each year of service. The
synod is studying a $1.3
million budget.
Also in his address, Bishop
Ragg noted the church ,has
enjoyed tremendous growth
in Africa and Southeast Asia
in the last decade.
