The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-05-11, Page 21Norman Manning dies Norman Manning of 16 B4 tannia Road East in GO'derich died in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital onFriday, May 5 at the age of 78 He was born on January 10, 1900 in Hullett Township to Ada' (Shrobrook) and Charles Manninng. He 'lived in Hullett Town- ship until moving to Tuckersmith in 1919. He worked as a farmer until 1960 when he became the proprietor of Benmiller General Store .where he stayed until his retirement. On May 20, 1925 he married Elva Nott. Following his marriage, he lived with his wife in Tuckersmith until 1960 and then in Benmiller. He was a member of Vic- toria Street United Church in Goderich and was also a member off I.O.O.F. Lodge in Clinton. Real Estate 7. A funeral service was held at Stiles Funeral, Home in Goderich on Monday, May 8 at 2 p.m. The Reverend John D.M. Wood officiated. Interment was in Clinton Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Manning, Jim Nott, Benson Finnigan, Kitchener, Fin- nigan, Norman Simpson and Don Chillman. Flower bearers were John Manning and Bill Manning. Goderich man buried Stewart Joseph Gilders off Goderich died in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital on Friday, May 5 at the age of 54. He was born in Goderich on May 13, 1923 to Joseph and Agnes (Bradshaw) Gilders. He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Ellwood (Lola) Atkinson of Goderich, Mrs. Gordon (Barbara) Pollock of R.R. 5 Goderich, Ruby of Goderich and Mrs. Albert (Lillian). Govier= of Oshawa; and three brothers, Alvin of Goderich, Ray of Clinton and Wilfred of Goderich. A funeral was held at McCallum Funeral Home on Monday; May $ at 2 p.m. The Reveredn G.L. Royal of- ficiated. Interment was in Colborne Cemetery; •" Colborne Town- ship. Pallbearers -were Bob Pollock, Wayne Gilders, Jim Govier, Jim Boyco, Joe Essex, and Doug Gilders. The meeting opened with Charolette Norman at the piano. Mrs. Hugh, McCreath was in charge of the meeting and welcomed the ladies and guests. Margaret Coombs then introduced the guest speaker Mrs. Gonie from the Town and Country Home Makers, showing some slides and tellinghe members of their work and how one can become a Home Maker and what their work consists of as a home maker. Mrs. Coombs presented Mrs. Gonie with a gift and thanked her for coming. Lunch was served and social time was had by all. The Achievement Day was held in Blyth last .Saturday for the project, Focus on Living. The Auburn Women's Institute will hold their May meeting on May 16 and the guest speaker will be Mrs. Pat Niblock. She will speak on energy conservation. Everybody is welcome. Mr. and Mrs. Don Blacker moved to Goderich last week after living in Auburn since last fall. The Conestoga College course on communications has successfully started in Auburn with eight persons attending. Last week's topic was, a Quick Brain Quiz on how to raise money with proceeds going to a favorite community project. All students did well and the. register was ringing quickly. Those attending had a lot of fun while learening. More interesting topics will be discussed in the coming weeks. LIONS CLUB Lion Fred Lawrence was in charge of the bi-weekly Lions Club meeting held in the Community Memorial Hall last Wednesday evening. The Junior Farmers • • • sponsor f The Huron County Junior Farmers are sponsoring 'a totally new project this summer. With the help of several residents at the Bluewater Centre for the Developmentally Han- dicapped and one Junior Farmer member hired for the summer, they are going to plant, weed, harvest and market a vegetable garden. The residents have a garden tractor, plough and tillers which will be used to care for a three-quarter acre garden. The Centre, which has been in operation for two years, is anxious to make use of the surrounding property, while at the same time, to preserve the rural setting and to ' pttvide agricultural training for some of the residents. The Junior Farmers hope to make a profit from .the project and return a portion of it into -improving the garden of the facilities at the Centre for additional resident training andsummer em- ployment for Junior Far- mers. The whole purpose of this project is to give the residents practical training which will hopefully enable them to return to the community with added skills. But, to be successful with this project, the Junior Farmers need the support of the community. Auburn news Eleanor Bradnock, correspondent, 526-7595 was sent to the Blyth Figure Skating Clubz Lions Randy Machan and Stephen Campbell are taking over the bulletin editor duties. The Fund Raising Com- mittee reported that several projects are about to ,get underway. The Lions Club have decided to build new bleachers for the ball diamond. An aactjon sale is to be held on May 27 with possibly a bake sale. The Auburn Lions plan to enter a float in the Mount Forest Lions 40th Anniver- sary parade. Winners of the 50-50 draw of $150 was won by Dennis Little of Goderich. The winning ticket was drawn by Lion Charlie Shaw of Blyth. BIRTHDAY COMMITTEE Don't forget, the planning meeting for Auburn's 125th birthday party next year (1979) is to be held on May 24 in the Community Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. It is hoped that all conveners and their members will be present to submit their .plans.. If this event is : to be a success, it takes everyone working together to make this an event to be remembered.
