July 1, 2 and 3, 1977 was the
occasion of The First
Canadian Bicycle Rally. Held
in Woodstock, Ontario the
Rally attracted nearly 800
participants from all over
Canada, the USA and Britain.
The Rally was organized by
the South Central Regional
Committee of the Ontario
Cycling Association (OCA) in

co-operation with the City of
Woodstock and the Wood-
stock Cycling Club. • As the
provincial Sports Governing
Body for cycling, the OCA
was supported financially by
grant funds issued by the
Ontario Ministry of Culture
and Recreation. A grant was
also given by the City of
Woodstock.
The Rally organizing
committee presented a
variety of bicycling events
including: bicycle races,
tours (including a moonlight
ride), bicycle games, Moto
cross, bicycle and
manufacturers' displays,
film shows, demonstrations,
lectures and a bike -in church
service. Evening en-
tertainment included square
dancing, a wiener roast,
campfire'singalongs, and the
1977 North American Roaring
Championship.
The majority of par-
ticipants camped out at
Pittock Conservation Area in
Woodstock. Eighty-three
people stayed at local motels,,
and eleven at the hostel.
Participants ranged in age
from 1 to 71. They came from
a wide range of social groups
and backgrounds. All had one
thing in common, an en-
thusiastic interest in
bicycling and an urge to
travel.
In this era of faltering
hearts, failing energy sup-
plies and even increasing
auto prices, the bicycle has
regained its former appeal.
Bicycles are not just a means
of transportation for those
who cannot afford anything
better. For those who want to
get fit and stay fit, bicycling
is an excellent sport and
recreation.
Following the National and
YProvincial recreational
cycling conferences held July
and August 1977 it was
decided that the 1978 National
rally will be hosted again by'
Ontario. Following the
success of the first rally, the

1978 Great Canadian Bicycle
Rally will be held in Wood-
stock, Ontario.
1978 planning reflects an
expansion of 1977
programming an.d will in-
clude Bicycle Races
organized by the Woodstock
Cycling Club on a course in
downtown Woodstock.
Bicycle Tours are organized
by the OCA Tours Committee.
Cycling, associations,
wholesalers and manufac-
turers will contribute to a
cycle show to be put on
display at Woodstock Art
Gallery. Bicycling film shows
and slide presentations will
take place at various times.
throughout the Rally, and
social activities will play a
more prominent role in 1978.
There will be a "Speaker's
Forum" for riders to air their
views, conduct a debate, or
just let off steam.
Rally registration costs will
r
oodstock
be the same as 1917. That is,
$5. per individualfor the 3 day
Rallyer, and $10. for a family
registration. Day Trippers
(non campers) pay $2.50 or
$5. for a family. (These low
prices were possible because
subsidies were made
available by the OCA and the
City of Woodstock.) In 1977,
the work was done by
volunteers with a part time
registrar. In 1978, we will use
a full time registrar during
the spring and summer, an4
funds will be sought for hirin
of secretarial help. Funds wilt
be needed for expanding thy
publicity and promotional
programs and prizes will b
needed for the many events'`
on the enlarged '78 Rally
programs. An outline of th91
1978 Rally follows. ,r
