Athletic briefs
There was a meeting of the WOAA this week
and there was some bad news for Goderich
baseball. There will be no peewee or bantam
hardball this season because of lack of players in
some cases and lack of coaches and managers in
other.
+++
While some baseball teams will not be
operating the Goderich Tykes have managed to
maintain a player roster of 15 and they will be
playing in the local circuit as will the midgets.

The industrial league begins their season this
Sunday at 2 p.m. with five league games. The ten
teams in the league will play 22 games each
during the regular season and their divisional
all-star game is scheduled for July 6.
The Huron Central Ladies' Softball League
began season play Wednesday and their season
will run through August 17. The league features
nine teams, five from Goderich and most games
will be played at Robertson, Victoria and St.
Marys School while doubleheaders will be played
at Agriculture Park Wednesday nights beginning
at 7 p.m.

Due to the teachers' strike in Huron County,
sports programs at GDCI have been curtailed for
the balance of the year. The students will not be
able to participate in track and field or soccer.
The boys basketball season was also cut short by,
the strike as the teams in the Huron -Perth
conference began to prepare for the playoffs.
+ ++
Response was good for T -Ball registration held
at the Recreation office last Saturday as 53 girls
and boys between the ages of 5 and 9 signed up
for the league. Organizers are hoping that as
many as four teams will be involved in the game
with the schedule to start around June 5.
+ ++
Registration for softball was less encouraging
as only 28 interested persons signed up for the
town league. Last year 35 indicated an interest in
a softball league but the plans fell through
because time became a factor. Recreation
director Mike Dymond was not optimistic that
anything - would become of the, 028 people
registered for softball.
+++
The Goderich Men's Slowpitch league will
begin their season in a couple of weeks and the
league has grown from seven teams last year to
ten. Most league games are played at the Signal -
Star and this year the league will also schedule
two games at the Forresters diamond in„ Ben -
miller each Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.
+++
Forty-four enthisiastic cyclists raised over
$1,600 in the cancer bike-a-thon held in Goderich,
Sunday. It didn't take the group long to complete
the 15 km. route through town but with so many
cyclists out Sunday afternoon it was difficult to
tell where the route went.
+++
If all goes according to plan, there will be a few
race dates in Goderich in August and additional
funds generated through the lottery and grants
will provide lights for the hardball diamond and
soccer field at Agriculture Park. There are also.
some plans to upgrade the softball diamond so
the measurements conform to OASA rules.

Industrial softball league
begins play this Sunday
BY DAVE SYKES
This Sunday the Goderich
Industrial Softball League
begins another season of play
with five league games
beginning at 2 p.m.
Again this year the league
will feature 10 teams in two
divisions. The Maitland
division is comprised of
McGee Pontiacs, last year's
champions, Little Bowl,
Fisher Builders, Green and
Parent and Gord's Sports.
Ziebart,, Lakeport Steel,
Canada Company, French
Cleaners and Graham
Electric form the Dunlop
Division. The only change in
the league is in a name. The
Brindley Transport team is
now Graham Electric.
The divisions were formed
according to the finals
standings at the conclusion of
the season last year. The
Maitland Division was for-
med by the teams who
finished 1-3-5-7-9 respectively
last year. The Dunlop division
is composed of the teams who
finished 2-4-6-8 and .10 last
year.
The season will begin with
five games this Sunday and
each team will play 22 games
during the regular schedule
until its conclusion August 20.
All league games will be
played on Sunday afternoon
and evenings and Monday
and Thursday evenings
beginning at 7:15 p.m,
But once the grandstand
has been erected at
Agriculture Park, there will
likely he racing on Thursday
nights throughout August and
the league will then switch its
Thursday dates to Wed-
nesday.
The top four teams from
league play will be invited to
participate in the annual
Labor Day Tournament held
at Agriculture Park and
sponsored by the league. The
selections will be made on
points and not position in the
standings.
There will be some major
improvements at Agriculture
Park this year with the
building of the new grand-
stand. Through lottery ticket
sales and with a generous
grant structure lights will
also be added -to the hardball
diamond and the soccer field.
The softball field will also
be revamped since the
present park measurements
do not conform to OASA
rules. The right and left field
line measurvnents will have
to be extended at least 15 feet
to bring them to the minimum
225 foot requirement and
since the fences will be
moved back new lights will be
added in centre field.
Once the field
measurements are extended
the existing fencing will be
replaced with a six foot
outfield fence. Thy \ ( 1 k ,it
the park may not be com-
pleted until the season
is finished but plans have not
been finalized.
The Industrial league in-
volves close to 200 men in-
cluding players, coaches,
managers and umpires.
Before the start of each
season the teams of the
league are allowed to protect
10 players each and the
remaining players are put
into a draft. The last place
team from the previous
season begins the draft
selections until all teams
have 15 players on their
roster. There are no rule
changes planned for the
league this year but the
umpire's association 4s
examining a rule that will
allow a base runner to leave
the base while the pitcher is
in his motion. Both the
Western Ontario Athletic
Association and Ontario
Amateur Softball Association
have dropped this rule.
The Industrial league .will
hold the annual all-star game
July 6 that pits the Maitland
Division stars against their
counterparts from the Dunlop
division. AU players in the
league vote on the all-star
selections.

cludes president Ron Klages;
