The Goderich Signal-Star, 1978-05-11, Page 2PAGE 2—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1978 Tid Bits...Tid Bits...Tid Bits... BY JOANNE WALTERS Don't forget the Blood Donor Clinic on Wednesday, May 17 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This clinic will be held at North Street United Church instead of at the high school as it has been in the past. Please note this change in location. Organizers don't want to lose any donors because of the change. The Goderich Kinsmen Club is sponsoring, the clinic and the Kinettes are helping by offering a babysitting service in- the afternoon for those donors with children. They will also be sending out reminder cards to past donors. First-time donors are most welcome to the clinic. In order not to lose any student due to the location change, the Red Cross will use their mini bus to run a shuttle service, transporting students who want to give blood, from the high school to the church at 3:30. +++ May 15 to 19 is Police Week, Today, tomorrow and Saturday, there will be a police display at Suncoast Mall. A total of 1,418 persons, including 251 pedestrians,. died in motor vehicle -related accidents in 1977 -- a reduc- tion of 6.2 per cent over the 1976 total of 1,511. "I share the belief of many policeand safety officials that the seat -belt legislation plus lower speed limits, are having a noticeable effect on the death statistics," said. Snow. "Even so, far too many drivers ignore these life- giving laws; as the growing number of charges in- dicates," he continued. "I trust they will 'get the message' when they see the continuing reduction in deaths on the highways since these laws came into effect." Where seat -belt use and non -seat belt use were available, indications were that in an accident, the belt wearer's survival chances were 16 times- higher, said Snow. "While it's encouraging that there were fewer deaths on Ontario roads during 1977, it doesn't change thereality and tragedy of the total ac- cident picture. The reality is that any number of traffic deaths is too many. There's much room for•improvement of our driving habits...from the use of seatbelts and ob- servance of the speed limits, to the act of being alert behind the wheel." +++ Are there any poets or poetry -lovers out there?
