Of particular concern to Ontario's farmers is the growing dependency on imported foods. The province was nearly self-sufficient in 1961 but is rapidly losing the capacity to feed its citizens. The 36 -page brief showed that, unless present trends were reversed, Ontario would be producing only 7 percent of the wheat, 57 percent of the beef, 75 percent of the pork, and 46 percent of the fruits and potatoes needed by 1985. Local NFU wants corn commission BY GRACE AUSTIN In the press release recently, District 6 members of the National Farmers' Union (NFU) have made known their dissatisfaction over advice given to them by various marketing experts including commodity houses and grain traders. Ontario says bean growers were advised last December by the Ontario Soya Bean Growers Marketing : Board, on theadvice of an "expert" seriously consider marketing the bulk of their product at $6 per bushel. Many did, and since then soya beans have exceeded $7. per bushel at various times. Corn growers too were advised to contract some of their 1978 crop at anything over $2 per bushel. Now contracts are offering producers $2.25 per bushel. With full production costs at over $2.50 per bushel, the result is non-existent wages and return on investment for corn producers. Among the chief victims are beginning farmers, who often must act on the advice 'of bank creditors. The National Farmers Union believes that a Corn Commission should be for- med to make changes in the present marketing system for corn producers. 25th Anniversary 1O% OFF LARGEST STOCK IN THE COUNTY WORK BOOTS —Industrial — Farm — Factory Plain or safety toe PUNCTURE PROOF SOLES ROSS SHOE SHOP Hannam said, the growing dependence on imported foods was the result of the government's failure to realize the potential of agriculture for stimulating the economy. "This government main- tains it is committed to a healthy agriculture but its support is only half-hearted. "Perhaps the, ` best in- dication of its lack of strong commitment is the budget of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Most ministries received a healthy increase this year. When inflation is taken into ac- count, OMAF's budget will be cut by six to eight percent." "The government's lack of initiative is hurting more than just the farm com- munity," continued Hannam. "We are importing over $340 million in food that could be produced here. "Those imports translate into 6,000 farmers forced out of business and 7,000 jobs lost in the food processing sector alone. When you consider the farm supply sector as well as the multiplier effect, we have probably lost well over 50,000 jobs." The OFA's brief contained a number of recom- mendations to stimulate the farm sector: a major promotional and marketing campaign to sell Ontario produce; government - assistance to improve thte efficiency of the food processing industry; more government funds to help improve farming efficiency and competitiveness; and a review of the laws and regulations which are 'smothering agriculture with red tape. Hannam concluded that farmers are faced with a tragic paradox. It's a disgrace, however, that we cannot feed even ourselves. Our minimum objective should be to maintain our production capacity at a level of self- sufficiency."
