BY JEFF SEDDON The Huron County Board of Education decided Monday that since parents com- plained about extended periods at Seaforth District High School and South Huron District High School then parents should be asked if they like the lengthened classes. The board was told Monday by its schod programs committee that no acti9n should be taken to alter period length at the two schools despite complaints from parents that the classes were too long. The committee said in its report that both principals had conducted surveys of teachers and students and received a positive reaction to the ex- tended periods. Seaforth trustee John Henderson reminded the board that it was -parents, not students, or teachers, that complained about the period length. He said it was parents that were concerned and it should have been parents that were surveyed.. chairman Dorothy Wallace told the board that the principal's survey showed that both students and teachers liked the extended periods. Teachers felt that the extra class time improved the quality of work, permitted them to get more done in a class and to improve the content of each lesson. Students felt that the extra time permitted them more time for understanding lessons and that extra time in study periods allowed them better use of school facilities such as the library for per- sonal use. Wallace paid the principals indicated that the parents had a certain responsibility to keep students in line during their time out of the classroom She said the schools wen't toblame if students enjoyed the privilege of using the family car and an extended period to "run down to Stratford for a Big Mac." , Henderson said some of the parents against the extended period had children going to school on buses. He said the students in some cases get to school at 8:30 in the morning and don't have a class until 104 or have an early class at 9:06 and nothing to do until ringdance success Mrs. Verna Ritcey of Middleton, Nova Scotia has been visiting her mother, Mrs. J. F. Payne at Walton and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Chisholm and family in Dungannon. Olive Chisholm and Mrs. Ritcey are sisters. Dungannonites presently in Wingham Hospital are: Virginia Chisholm, who went in on Thursday with intestinal infection; Frank Moulton, who was admitted on Thursday with swelling in his legs; Mrs. Elma Reed, who has been hospitalized for the past two weeks; and Mr. Russell Johnston who has been in the last few weeks. Mr. Norman Marsh of Florida, called on his cousin, Mel Jones last week after attending the funeral for Miss Davies,in Clinton. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Smith visited their son and family Mr. and Mrs. Karl Smith at Chatham .last weekend on the occasion of their grand- daughter's first communion. Mrs. Margaret Pritchard of Toronto visited her brother, Frank Pentland and other relatives on the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Irvin had an anxious day or two during the week after hearing that their grandson, Harold Stirling, was in hospital following a tumble from a second -storey window of his home in Thamesville but were relieved to learn that he is fine. Mrs. Lloyd Hodges returned home on Saturday after spending a few days in hospital in London. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McNall and family had a sale recently and moved out to the West last week. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Park and family have moved into the home on the Mill Hill recently vacated by the McNalls. The Dungannon Agricultural Society's annual spring dance held at Satlford Hall on Saturday night was very successful with the tickets beingsold out in ad- vance. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the lunch, supplied by the members, was well received. Winners of a 50-50 draw held in conjunction with the dance were as follows: first, $142.50 - Mr. R. MacDonald, Ripley; second, $84.90 - George Smyth; third, $56.60, Mrs. Sharon Dawson. Mr. and Mrs. Wilf Pentland have returned home after spending the winter .in Florida. laint after lunch. Wallace said the principals felt that "recent problems in the field of education in Huron made a parent survey unpopular. She said the mood of parents was not right for an accurate survey of opinions and feelings. Clinton trustee Dorothy Williams said she made ite original suggestion for the survey and recommended that parents be surveyed. She said someone else added that teachers and students be included. Superintendent of education R.B. Allan said he was inclined to agree with the principals that the climate was not right for a survey of parents. He said the general feeling of the public was "tense" and that the survey may be more- accurate if it were delayed. "The climate is going to get rougher," said Brussels trustee Donald McDonald. Colborne trustee Shirley Hazlitt reminded the board that a survey done in the fall would be pointless since it would be too late to make any changes in timetabling. She said if parents wanted the period shortened now was the time' to find out to allow change to be made for the 1978=79 year. The matter was sent back to the program committee for further envestigation with a reminder from director of education John Cochrane that principals are in charge of the management of their schools.
