If the books were your own, you may look after them
BY JEFF SEDDON
If students in Huron County
had to buy their own school
books, taxpayers may save
considerable education costs
and the books would probably
receive better care.
That was the reasoning
used Monday when the Huron,
County Board of 'Education
endorsed a resolution fpom
the York 'County Boayd of
Education to change the
Education Act to/ permit
individual boards yo decide if
Goderich Town
Council Briefs
BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER
Goderich volunteer fire brigade is serving notice to
Ashfield Township immediately that unless a fire
agreement is reached between the two municipalities
within 15 days, no fire calls in the south-west corner of
Ashfield will be answered by the Goderich firemen.
Fire committee chairman Stan Profit said he was not
happy about the ultimatum, but said word had been
received from the Ontario Fire Marshal's office that
should fire damage occur in Colborne Township or
Goderich Township while firemen were in Ashfield, the
town could be liable in a court of law. Goderich has
agreements with the townships of Colborne and
Goderich, although these are currently up for review.
Profit praised Ashfield Township officials, who he said
had always paid their fire bills promptly and without
complaint. He also said Ashfield Reeve Warren Zinn was
apprized of the situation which has been pointed out by
the fire marshal and that negotiations are already un-
derway toward an agreement.

Once again the two hour parking limits on Hamilton
Street from Newgate Street to Victoria Street will be
lifted.
Councillor John Doherty said he'd done a parking
study on that area and found that 29 parking spots are not
being utilized to the best advantage.
All businessmen in the area feel the parking restric-
tions should be• lifted. They include Music Arts, Singer
Sewing Machine, Beckers, Pryde Memorials, Fabric and
Maur, Coach House Travel Service, Skeoch Business
Equipment and Bill Bradley.

Councillor Elsa Haydon, chairman of the parks
committee, was given the approval to spend the $5,000
discretionary item in the parks budget for the further
development of Dawnrose Park in the Delbar sub-
division.
Haydon and co-chairman Dave Gower spoke highly of
the co-operation they have enjoyed with the people in the
area of Dawnrose Park who filled out. questionaires and
attended public meetings ,to hammer, out the best
possible park plan for the enjoyment of all.

The administrative committee was charged with its
first official , duty Monday evening since the
reorganization of council committees. It will consider the
best way to recognize the visit of 25 French students to
Goderich this week.
A letter from Paul Howe, head of languages of GDCI
asked that town council entertain the students and their
hosts at a reception. °
"This is a very worthwhile occasion," said Councillor
E1'sa Haydon.

Goderich town council has complied with a request
from the Goderich and District Pro -Life group and of-
ficially declared the week of May 7 - 14 Respect for Life
Week. This is a preaml?le to 1979 which is to'be declared
the International Year of the Child.
Councillor Elsa Haydon felt it would be "more honest"
to call it Respect for Children Week.
"We have mother's day and father's -day," said
Councillor Haydon. "Why not children's week?"
Mayor Deb Shewfelt said he understood Haydon's
viewpoint, but called for a vote on the motion as
presented because it was what was requested by Pro -
Life,

they wanted to supply text-
books
extbooks or have students buy
their own.
The York board sent their
resolution to all boards of
education in the province
looking for support for the
suggested change. The
change would make the
supply of textbooks to
students "permissive rather
than mandatory" according
to the York proposal.
Under present legislation
boards are required to supply
each student with a textbook
for all courses taught that
student. The York trustees
felt that by leaving that
decision up to each individual
hoard that hoard may want to
realize savings in its budget.
Along with that was the
consideration that if the
student owned the hook he
would likely take better care
of it.
Superintendent of
education Jim Coulter told
the Huron board that under
the present legislation only
Grade 13 students are
responsible for their own
books. He said that with used
books available from
graduating students Grade 13
students ;ace an average
annual cost of $60 to purchase
the required texts. He said if
the student had to buy all the
books new the cost would
probably be about $100.
Goderich trustee Cayley
Hill said the switch in
responsibility may cause
some hardship amongst some
families in the county but
pointed out that years ago
w,hcn economic conditions in
the country were worse than
today students had to sttp,,ply
their own textbooks. He said
the hooks quite often pass
through several students and
that the ministry of education
may be encouraged to reduce
the number of changes in
textbooks needed. He said the
ministry constantly changes
required texts and those
changescost taxpayers a
considerable sum of money.

Woman wins lottery
An 'RR 2, Clinton woman,

$10,000 in last Thursday
night's Wintario lottery draw.
Mrs. Mabel Price bought
„her first ticket in six months

fact, Mrs. Price, whose
husband Glenn runs Clere-Vu
Auto W'reckers, has only
bought six tickets in all the
time the Wintario draw has
been running.
She almost didn't buy the
COOP
ticket at all, but just hap-
pened to be in Cutt's Store
in Goderich when a man
ahead of her in the check out
asked for a. ticket and she
decided to get one tool.
"We plan to take a trip to
Vancouver to see some aunts
and uncles I've never met,"
she replied when asked how'
she planned to spend the
money.
She said she also wanted to
give her daughter Heather
and son-in-law Bill Hoggarth
a trip as well.
