So here we are - ready to
start the trek home. The
weather has been so great the
last two months, it is hard to
get started. The last couple of
weeks, the temperature has
'been well up in the 80s. I hear
the weather is nice at home -
but on the cool side. That is
understandable with the cold
corning out of the ground and
rtha is on
all that big Lake Huron to
warm up.
I'm anxious to see our
spring flowers. The flowers in
Florida are very beautiful but
nothing quite touches the first
show of the ''crocus,
snowdrops and the other tiny
firsts of spring followed by
tulips and daffodils and a
million other beauties.
This year I saw my first
Kapoc tree. It is a beautiful,'
very large, tall tree that is
dotted with large single
bright flowers six to eight
inches in diameter and four to
five inches high - each flower
sits in a brown featherlike cup
about one and a half inches
deep. A fantastic sight.
Right now the orchid trees

are blooming -- at a distance.
The solid masses of color
reminded me of our apple
trees in bloom -- but as you
get near them, the blossoms
are quite large and much
deeper in colors ranging from
red to purple,
The Jacauranda trei is also
starting to bloom. These
Mowers are smaller and in
bunches and the colors are
heavenly blue to bright violet.
This too is a large tree.
Another tall gorgeous tree
is the Tree of Gold - Sarasota
has adopted this as their own
tree and planted hundreds of
them and the city just shines
with the sunniest gold you
could ever see.
The Azaela bushes are
fading. They have bloomed
for weeks, The flowers are
more than twice as large as
we see on our tiny Azaela
"trees" in pots from the
florist.
As we travel through the
different States going 'home,
we w ill see masses of these
flowers in beautiful pastels of
every shade and. hue - a far
cry from the old shades of
pink and rose. I still like the
old bushes. The colors were
much deeper and more vivid.
The Dogwood trees will be
glowing white for miles and
miles along the highway and
another bright pinky -violet
tree nearby will accent their
whiteness.
When near Cincinnati, the
golden forsythia, are
blooming. The city has set out
masses of these fine bushes
all along the highway and
they are surely "springy".
Well, one could talk spring
flowers for hours and hours,
so I' will keep on enjoying all I
see until I reach home, then 1
can really fall apart!
Last week Doug and I.went
aloft fora ride over Florida -
what a sight. We were only up
for an hour to an hour and a
half but we covered about 100
miles of .coastline from St
Pete's to Fort Myers and
back and the sights are just
hard to believe.
Florida -is only about 150
miles wide from the Atlantic
Coast to the Gulf of Mexico -
surely not very wide but it
amazes you to see that 90
percent of • the population
hugs the coastline. There is
lots and' lots of real estate
down here but it is all
crowded with people along
the oceans.
If anyone was going to buy
property down here, the first

thing they should do is have
someone fly them over the
property. You get •.a won-
derful idea of what you are
getting into, whether it is a
good section of the country to
live in or if you are buying a

Mr. Hannam explained,
present agricultural policies,

were short-term one that

extent of our poor tariff

"We are faced with

the lack of tariff protection,

miles from all civilization.
From 800 to 1,000 feet above
you can read every detail of
the land clearly. There are
hundreds of round water
holes that are hard to figure
out as you can be pretty sure
they aren't man-made.
Florida, actually, is mostly
farmlands with thousands of
cattle ranches - handles mare
cattle than our western
provinces' - believe it or not!
The ranchers are real
cowboys with their boots and
hats - haven't met the spurs
that jingle jangle jingle! but
they are around. They have
quite a variety of cattle - very
colorful and every shape and
size.
We like to attend their
rodeo in March at an inland
town. There they show off
their fine horses and cattle
beasts. The Brahma bulls
always put on a big show.
This year the animals made a
better showing than the
people trying to ride or throw
them. Only one or two
Canadian cowboys were in
the show this spring but one of
them was top man in points.
Along with cattle raising,
there are large farms in the
citrus business. Orchards
stretch for miles and the neat
patches of fruit trees are very
pretty from the sky. Right
now these trees, also, are in
bloom and the perfume is
intoxicating.
To see the many faces of
Florida is a real experience.
You cannot see it in a few
weeks or in one or two visits -
you have to live it, feel it as
you do in the Canadian woods
or mountains. There is no
comparison - they are too far
apart. You just enjoy each
day as it comes, whether it is
north or south. It can ALL be
beautiful.

Yes Virginia, Ontario does have an oil and
natural gas business industry and it is right
out there under the corn fields of Kent,
Lambton and Huron counties.
Chris Dennett
In the Free Press this Saturday staff
writer Chris Dennett takes a look at the
boom times that have returned to the
antique but still highly productive
'Southwestern Ontario oil patch.
The soaring price of energy has
made even the smallest of oil and natu-
ral gas reserves into a rich resource
and over a dozen companies have
raced back on to the patch to exploit
the area's petroleum potential.
It's a $25 million business that is get-
ting richer by the hour. Read all about it
in this Saturday's London Free Press.
There's a world of reading pleasure to look forward to every Sat-
urday in the Free Press. If you want to travel, we'll tell you where
to go, the cost and what to expect when you arrive, whether it's
across the country or across the world. We'll show you a feature
home of the week, give you a book review, tell you about good
dining and give you tips on photography., Have a good chuckle
with the color comics or do some serious reading on the editorial
pages or in the Canadian Magazine.
