AM & G Board meets
Energy conservation effort keeps h
The regular meeting of the
Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital Board took
place April 17.
?The minutes of the previous
meeting were reviewed and
many of the items discussed
at that time had been
reviewed at special meetings
in the interim.
The finance committee
reviewed all the expenditures
for the month of March, and
these were accepted as
presented and were in line.
It was significant that the
P.U.C. charges have been
remaining at a low level
recently and this is attributed
to the energy conservation
efforts of the director of
maintenance of the hospital,
inasmuch as a concerted
program of energy con-
servation has been entered
into in the past three to four
months.
Such areas as the
decreasing the wattage of
fluorescent c tubes in areas
where lighting is required on
a 24 hour basis, increasing the
amount of fluorescent tubing
required in areas where such
is non-essential, shutting off
non -required fans when they
are not needed, decreasing
the amount of steam
produced in the boilers and
many other areas such as this
have tended to decrease the
overall consumption of
energy. Mr. Don Greene, the
director of maintenance, was
commended for his efforts in
this regard.
There were many concerns
expressed with regard to the
budgetary constraints for the'
hospital for the year 1978-79
and during the course of
special meetings in the past
two o>S• three weeks, '• the
questiotit have been asked of
the Ministry of Health and
formally transmitted to them
as to the reasons why the
Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital received the
smallest percentage increase
of any hospital in the County.
This question will be an-
swered - when the
management committee
meet with the Ministry of
Health personnel in the near
future to discuss the total
subject of funding and
budgetary allocation.
The administrator in-
dicated that he had had the
initial meeting with the
Service Employee's Union
relative to'the decrease in,
available hours for staff at
the hospital, and as a result of
that meeting further specific
plans were being prepared
for discussion within the next
week. Mr.Banks indicated
that the. method *of achieving
the hour savings and dollar
savings certainly would be a
co-operative effort between
the hospital and the unions
and the non-union personnel
throughout the hospital.
The Bylaw Review Com-
mittee under the chair-
manship of Mr. Tom Troyan,
presented their report with
regard to the administrative
bylaws of the hospital and
this completed a very com-
prehensive review of all the
existing bylaws with a
number of new recom-
mendations for the Board's
consideration. On receipt of
the medical staff revision to
the medical staff bylaws of
the hospital these will all be
consolidated and put before
the Board at the May meeting
in order that they can be
given the blessing of the
Corporation at its annual
meeting in June of this year.
The administrator reported
on a number of items and one
is of significant interest
which is the Current Bill 70,
which is in front' of the
Ontario Legislature having
received a second reading
and this dealt with the oc-
cupational health and safety
act and its regulations as
amended by the Minister of
Labour for the Province of
Ontario.
There, is much controversy
with regards to whether or
not this Bill should apply to
hospitals and there have been
many position papers put
forward in this regard. The
Board Members were given
copies of the correspondence
sent to the Minister of Labour
from the Ontario Hospital
Association and the final
position of that Ministry is
being awaited at the present
time.
Mrs. Ora McCallum,
President of the ladies'
auxiliary at the hospital,
indicated, that the auxiliary
were holding their annual
Penny Fair and . that they
hoped to have between $3,000
to $4,000 available for iden-
tified programs for the
hospital this fiscal year. Mr.
Banks will be providing the
ladies' auxiliary with the
priority list of necessary
additions to thehospital for
the auxiliary to consider.
Mrs. McCallum also in-
dicated that the auxiliary had
consented to host a Hospital
Day Tea, which will be held in
the cafeteria of the hospital
on Hospital Day May 12. At
that time there will be
members of the senior
technical and professional
staff of the hospital available
to answer questions and it is
hoped that there will be some
items of interest for the
public to review and ask
questions about.
It was indicated that last
Sunday,,April 16 the hospital
auxiliary held the annual
awards day for the Can-
dystripers of the hospital and
L.L.L. to have
first anniversary
Last month's meeting of
Huron County's La Leche
League was held at the home
of Mary Beuerman in
Seaforth on April 12.
Discussion was centred on
preparing your home, your
family and yourself before
the arrival of the newborn.
Breastfeeding, it was pointed
out, is an easy and natural
way of learning to mother a
baby. Besides providing
complete food and protection
from infection and allergy,
breastfeeding means the
comforts and delights of a
special closeness for the
mother and the child.
La Leche League in Huron
County will be one year old
next month and to honor the
occasion, a special film night
has been arranged for
Saturday May 6. Anyone
interested in knowing more
about L' .J„L. and good
mothering through breast-
feeding are invited to this
special meeting at 160 Huron
Street, Clinton at 8:30 p.m.
Fathers are also welcome to
attend. As, with all league
functions, nursing babies are
always welcome.
Two films will be shown.
One, examines the im-
portance of early mother -
child relationships and is a
Time -Life color production.
The other color film is
narrated by Natalie Wood
and also features Susan St.
James and the president of
L.L.L. international.
The next regular L.L.L,
meeting will be held "the
second Wednesday of May in
Seaforth at 84 Market Street
at 8 p.m. The general
discussion will deal primarily
with the importance of good
family nutrition and take a
look at the various aspects of
weaning. ,The group
discussion leader will be Mrs.
Peter Bisback from HensaII.

12 of the volunteer Can-
dystripers were awarded
either caps, bands or pins or a
combination thereof, for their
efforts. The hospital auxiliary
were congratulated on the
effort that they had put
forward in organizing and
shepherding the Candystriper
program in the hospital and
the appreciation of all
members of the Board was
expressed.
It was approved by the
Board that Mrs. Jo Berry,
Chairrllan of the Board, at-

in May of this year. This is an
annual conference whereby
chairmen of boards get
together in caucus and hear
presentations by various
senior personnel in the
hospital and trustee field and
share information relative to
the ongoing operation - of
hospitals of Ontario. Mrs.
spital bill law
Berry attended the con-
ference last year and has
indicated that it was an ex-
cellent presentation` and is
looking forward to this
year's. '
Mr. Banks informed the.
meeting that recently the
hospital had had "In
Memoriam" cards printed
and distributed to the two
funeral homes in town. It is
significant that if donations
are being made in if,
of
loved ones that the hospital
would fund monies . in the
hospital's fund for the
necessary purchase' of
equipment which otherwise
would not be made available
to the hospital and medical
staff. It was made Known that
both Siles and McCallum
Funeral Homes have a good
supply of these cards and
certainly the hospital Board
would appreciate any con-
siderations which may be
given in this manner of
making bequests.
