ARNDT Copy Editor, Columnist Bay City, Mich., Times Goderich has a chance to host one of Europe's finest university choirs , nt‘xt summer.. From Ede University in The Netherlands, 86 Dutch people in this student choir will fly into Toronto June 23. 1978, and first homestays are arranged in Guelph. Carl H. Zwinck, of Ann Arbor, Mich., who handles ithese student exchange tours, reports he has written Goderich Mayor Delbert Shew felt on the possibility of Goderich hosting the group before they visit sister city Bay City, Mich., across Lake Huron. He explains, "The group will go directly by charter bus from Toronto Airport to Guelph for several nights in homes. If any organization in Goderich could provide homestays for one or more nights, as you wish, they could move from Guelph to Goderich before they live in Michigan homes. They perform free, even when you collect money from - the audience, in exchange for food and beds provided by host families, so this could be a fund-raising project. You keep any concert income. Your Rotary, Lions, Jaycees, churches. women's clubs. etc., might 'oe interested in this project. The group will be in Ontario, Michigan, Indiana and other U.S. states before flying back to The Netherlands from Toronto July 19th." For further information, Zwinck can be reached at P.O. Michigan 48104, Mackensen School, 5535 Dennis St., Bay City, Michigan 48706, through its Principal Arnold Martin, would like to link itself with a similar school (kindergarten through sixth grade) in sister city Goderich for classroom exchanges — school projects, art, pen pals, other interests. "This can be on a single classroom (grade) basis or school -wide,- says Martin. "The children are really hepped up about this. Goderich will be saddened to learn that sister city Bay City had a pre -Christmas tragedy that was one of the worst ever to hit the area — a Saturday. December 10, early morning blaze that struck the Wenonah Park Apartments Building downtown (former Wenonah Hmel), leaving nine persons dead and more than 40 injured. Several tenants were killed after jumping from their fourth floor- win- dows.. The,- hotel was built in 1907- 08 ever the ashes of the Fraser House, which burned on the bitter cold night of Dec. 23, 1906. Faulty wiring was blamed for the current blaze after investigators ruled put arson. It is not known whether the block -square structure overlooking the Saginaw River will he rebuilt. Goderich native buried Laura R. Knight, .who was horn in Goderich died in Victoria General Hospital in , Vancouver on December 13 at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her husband Jottn Harry Knight, commander RCN. She is survived by three sons, J. Carey Nisbett of Chester. England, Robin M.' Knight and William Knight both of Vancouver: one daughter, Vivian Cook of Saskatoon: one daughter-in- law, Phyllis A. Knight of Victoria: one brother. Lewis M. Carey of Victoria: one sister. Helen Heil of California and several grandchildren. A memorial service was held at St. Matthias Church in Vancouver on December 16 at 2 p.m. Canon W.E. Greehhelgh officiated. No flowers are requested by the. family. Anyone wishing to pay tr1ihute may do so by contrihutling to their favorite charity.
