THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1977 have McMillan and Eric Johnstone honored too Evelyn Carroll receives highest Legion award years. In his opinion, he said, there was no one more deserving of the honor. Needless to say, a standing ovation followed the presentation of this award. Comrade Sharon Scruton presented her mother (Comrade Carroll) with a corsage from the Ladies' Auxiliary. It was very, fitting in Jubilee 3 that Comrade Evelyn should be presented with the Meritorious Service Award by her comrades of Branch 109. Comrade Evelyn spoke a few words of thanks The Ladies' Legion Auxiliary held their regular meeting on December 13. The meeting was very informal and over 75 members were present including a comrade from Grand Manan, New Brunswick. There were four new members initiated into the Auxiliary. They were Mrs. Charlotte Barwick, Mrs. Iris Sampson, Mrs. Joe MacKay and Mrs. Helen Townshend. Business of a routine nature was discussed and then the Branch executive members and friends of those to be honored were invited to the meeting. The year 1977, besides being Jubilee 3, is also the 50th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 and the 30th anniversary of the Ladies' Legion Auxiliary. Mr. David McMillan is the only curving chartered member of Branch 109 and because of this the Ladies' Auxiliary wished to do him honor. Comrade McMillan was called to the front and his grandaughter, Karen Draper, presented to him. on behalf of Evelyn Carroll of Goderich (centre) was presented with a scroll by Legion -Branch 109 President, Eric Johnstone (left) and with the Meritorious Service Award by Herman Young, District Commander for Zone C1 (right)at a ceremony on Tuesday, December 13. The award is the highest offered by the Legion and is given for outstanding service to the Legion and -community alike.'Mrs. Carroll is a 30 year member of the Ladies' Legion Auxiliary and an associate member of the Branch. She was president of the Auxiliary for five years and Zone Commander in Cl for eight years. In 1972 she was elected to the Ontario Provincial Command at Windsor convention as Honorary Provincial Treasurer and has held that office ever since. n Eric Johnstone~ President of Legion Branch 109, was presented with a plaque on Tuesday evening, December 13 at the Ladies' Legion Auxiliary meeting in recognition of 50 years of service to veterans, community and Legion. Presenting the plaque is Fern Moore, a char- tered memher of the Ladies' Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Stuart Chamney opened the meeting followed with,a hymn being sung. Mrs. Wes Jefferson gave a prayer followed with a reading. The hymn, "While Shepherds watched their flocks" was sung. Mrs. J. Hildebrand read a poem, "The Star of Bethelem" followed with hymn "Away in a Manger", Mrs, Wes Jef- ferson gave a reading on Christmas Lights. The hymn "Joy to the world" was sung. Mrs. Morley Johnston told of her trip to Christian Island where the U.C.W. sends its hales. It's a small island near Midland where about 600 Indians live. The only whites are the minister and principal of the school. They have a school, church, store and a day care centre. The children go to highschool in Midland. Mrs. Ray Hanna read a poem "Lights of Christmas". Mrs. E. Snowden took over for the business and read the new slate of officers. Mrs. H. Jefferson is the new president, Mrs. Robert Jefferson first vice and Mrs. E. Robinson second Vice. Mrs. Stuart Chamney is secretary -treasurer. Dave McMillan has two sons, Maurice of Goderich, a member of Branch 109 and Douglas of Stratford. The plaque presented by Fern was in recognition of 50 years of service to the veterans, community and Legion. Both Comrades Dave McMillan and Eric Johnstone made fitting replies. 'The big surprise of. the evening carne next when Comrade Mona Davis, Auxiliary President called upon Branch President Eric Johnstone to take over the meeting and introduce Comrade Herman Young, District commander for Zone Cl. The color bearers then escorted Comrade Evelyn Carroll to the front and Eric Johnstone presented her with a scroll in recognition for past services. Herman Young then pinned on Evelyn the dress pin of the Meritorious Service Award and she wa:; also given the one to wear on .her uniform. Comrade Young congratulated Evelyn on the honor bestowed upon her and said what a pleasure it was to work with her through the but was too surprised and overwhelmed to do much more. Heartiest congratulations and best wishes are sent to Comrade Evelyn from all her Comrades at Branch 109.
